Oncology/Hematology Nurse – RN, LPN, CMA (Full Time)

About the role

The Iowa Clinic is seeking a Registered Nurse (RN) Oncology & Hematology to provide support to our providers, safe and appropriate care for our patients, strengthen operational quality, and improve clinical patient outcomes.

Responsibilities

• Assist in educating patients and their families on the cancer diagnosis and explaining treatment options and processes.
• Assist in administering chemotherapy under the direction of a physician and provide support for managing chemotherapy side effects.
• Guide cancer survivors in ongoing prevention, surveillance, and intervention.
• Provide nursing services for clinic patients consistent with established professional nursing standards, including patient assessment, vital signs, medication intake, and complete patient history.
• Care for patients by coordinating and monitoring required laboratory and diagnostic procedures as indicated.
• Mix, administer, monitor, and document medications such as chemotherapy, hydration, and other medications as ordered.
• Perform phlebotomy procedures including peripheral IVs and drawing blood from catheters and ports.
• Apply knowledge of cancer disease process, treatment, side effects, and complications to anticipate and address patient emotional and practical needs.
• Facilitate and support interdisciplinary team communication between nurses, specialists, oncologists, and other health professionals.
• Teach patients and their families relevant and evidence-based teaching tools as required.
• Utilize critical thinking skills when responding to patient requests, pharmacy inquiries, conducting triage, and conveying messages to and from providers, clinics, specialists, and other care team members.
• Collaborate with medical support staff and assist with prioritizing clinical tasks to ensure efficient and effective workflows.
• Train and assist in competency verification of clinical staff.
• Document all activity appropriately in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) in an accurate and timely manner in accordance with legal requirements, professional nursing standards, and hospital/clinic policies.
• Monitor and work EMR tasks as assigned.
• Communicate with patients regarding clinical/medical problems and refer them to appropriate physicians as required.
• Monitor medical supply inventory.
• Communicate effectively with patients in a manner that protects their confidentiality, uses discretion, and is sensitive to their physical, emotional, and spiritual needs.
• Maintain awareness of workload of co-workers and offer assistance as needed.

Required Licenses and Education

• Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
• Current RN license to practice nursing in the State of Iowa.

Preferred Certifications

• Oncology Nursing Certification.

Work Experience

• Previous hematology/oncology nursing experience preferred, but not required.
