On Call Snow Plow Operator – Clearwater or St Cloud – Transportation Generalist

About the role

The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) District 3 will fill 2 On Call / Emergency Snow Plow Driver positions in Clearwater and St. Cloud. On-call emergency employees are intermittent fill-in drivers who work during snow and ice events, covering shifts for regular operators who are unavailable. During the snow and ice season, employees are typically assigned to either an A shift (12:00 AM – 12:00 PM) or B shift (12:00 PM – 12:00 AM) and may be asked to work 8 hours or more depending on the duration of the snow event. Incumbents must have immediate access to a phone and be able to report to work within one hour of being called.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain roadways for snow and ice control.
  • Prepare and inspect winter equipment.
  • Perform preseason snow route inspections and post-storm cleanup.
  • Set up winter stockpiles and transfer anti-icing and de-icing chemicals.
  • Install, repair, maintain, and remove snow fences; replace mailboxes.
  • Maintain documentation on snow and ice data for accurate reporting of inventory and resource management.
  • Perform traffic control set-ups and/or notify dispatch of disabled vehicles.

Requirements

  • One (1) year of experience in snow and ice control, soils, road surface maintenance, roadside maintenance, bridge maintenance, signs, or related activities (e.g., roadway maintenance, driving commercial vehicles, commercial landscaping, operating heavy equipment, or farm experience).
  • OR successful completion of a Heavy Equipment Operation and Maintenance Program (at least 60 semester credits or 90 quarter credits) to substitute for the experience requirement. Transcripts must be submitted for education to be considered.
  • Valid Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License with a Tanker Endorsement.
  • Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak, and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and maintain routine written logs and simple records.

This position is contingent upon passing a Federal Department of Transportation pre-employment drug test (with negative results), being subject to future random drug and alcohol testing, and registration in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Commercial Driver's License Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse. The incumbent will be subject to drug and alcohol testing, including pre-placement testing for evidence of marijuana, cocaine, opiates, phencyclidine (PCP), amphetamines (MDMA, MDA, and MDEA), and acetylmorphine (6-AM).

Successful candidates must pass past-employer reference checks, a criminal history check, employment reference checks, education/license verification, and a driver’s license check.

  • Previous MnDOT experience working as a Laborer, Transportation Associate, or Transportation Generalist.

Pay

$25.19 - $31.60 / hourly
