About the role
This is a part-time, on-call position at Forest Akers Golf Courses, assisting with a wide variety of routine manual labor tasks such as mowing, irrigation, and golf course turf maintenance. The role is ideal for those looking to start in golf course landscaping or seeking additional work. Expected hours are up to 29 per week from approximately April through November, with a starting pay of $16.50 per hour.

Responsibilities
- Assist with general landscaping tasks: mow, water, fertilize, litter control, operate equipment, cut weeds/brush/grass using hand and power tools; recognize field/lawn issues; install landscape plant material, signs, site furniture, edging, and boulders; shovel, rake, grade, dig, back-fill; haul materials.
- Operate equipment used in landscape maintenance and construction.
- Assist with installation of irrigation systems, topsoil, seed, and sod; transplant and move trees, shrubs, and flowers.
- Maintain light and medium-weight vehicles (oil checks, grease fittings, tire pressure); transport supplies, tools, and equipment using university vehicles.
- Update and maintain MSU's plant maintenance database using Field Maps.
- Issue, receive, and store supplies and equipment; maintain and install erosion control devices.
- Identify and treat plant diseases, insects, and related problems; shovel snow, sand, and de-ice walkways.
- Monitor working areas for safety compliance and proper working methods; use email; install tree protection fencing; maintain roads and walkways.
- Participate in MSU football tailgate clean-up.
Requirements
- Casual knowledge of tools, methods, materials, and equipment used in grounds maintenance.
- Must wear protective footwear (e.g., leather work boots).
- Good driving record; must submit operator’s license number for motor vehicle check.
- Able to work in variable and severe weather conditions.
- Frequent lifting of 26–75 pounds, with occasional lifting over 75 pounds.
- Basic computer skills, including email and internet use.
Qualifications
- Experience in grounds maintenance and commercial snow removal (desired).
- Experience with Field Maps (desired).
- Knowledge of facilities structure, processes, and procedures (desired).
- Possession of Michigan Commercial Pesticide Applicator License (desired).
- Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse population and problem-solve in a collaborative team environment.

Pay
Starting at $16.50 per hour.
