On-Call position with the Washington State School for the Blind (WSSB). Salary range: $20.99 - $27.97 hourly. Location: Clark County – Vancouver, WA.

The Washington State School for the Blind (WSSB) empowers blind and low-vision individuals to reach their full potential. Our programs and services span residential options, outreach services, specialized technology, and training for parents, educators, and service providers. Responsibilities

  • Provide instruction in independent living skills for blind/low-vision individuals in the residential setting, including social skills, home management, hygiene management, and clothing care.
  • Complete daily reports such as shift reports and data tracking sheets.
  • Supervise students to ensure safety in the residential setting.
  • Create a safe and professional learning environment that encourages student growth and respects individual student characteristics.
  • Implement positive behavior management strategies with students.
  • Plan and participate in leisure activities with students.
  • Complete basic housekeeping tasks in the residential setting.
  • Administer medication as directed by nursing care staff.
  • Perform other work as required.

Requirements

  • 1-2 years of college with a major emphasis in education, child development, or a related subject; OR 6 months minimum experience working with children, preferably in an educational setting; OR 6 months minimum experience working with blind/low-vision individuals; OR equivalent education/experience (may include volunteer/life experience).
  • Minimum age of 18.
  • Basic Microsoft Office software skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times.
  • Ability to respond to difficult, stressful, or sensitive interpersonal situations in ways that reduce or minimize potential conflict.
  • Possess basic Braille competency or the ability to obtain it.
  • Have or have the ability to obtain First Aid/CPR card and Food Handler's card.
  • Willingness and ability to work with students with diverse learning needs.
  • Ability to stand, sit, or walk for prolonged periods and lift or assist students as necessary.
  • Ability to monitor students on long-distance bus trips.
  • Willingness and ability to maintain good working relationships with staff, parents, and students.
  • Must pass state and federal criminal background checks.
  • Ability to learn, grow, and take action to meet the needs of others.

Certifications Required

  • CPR/First Aid (upon hire).
  • Food Handlers Card (upon hire).
  • Medication Administration training.
  • Basic UEB Braille Understanding (within 1 year).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with blind or low-vision individuals.
  • Experience working in an educational environment.
  • Certified Lifeguard.
  • Possession of a current and valid CDL.

Benefits

  • On-call staff are eligible for the Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
  • Vacation accrual on a pro-rata basis in accordance with WAC 357-31-165.
  • Paid holidays in accordance with WAC 357-31-010.
  • Paid personal holidays and sick time in accordance with WAC 357-31-055 and WAC 357-31-115.
  • Basic shift premium of $2.50 per hour for all assigned hours of work after 6:00 p.m. and before 6:00 a.m., and for assigned full evening or night shifts (evening shift: 8+ hours ending at or after 10:00 p.m.; night shift: 8+ hours beginning by 3:00 a.m.).

Pay

$20.99 - $27.97 hourly. New hires without State of Washington agency experience in a similarly situated position typically do not start at the top of the range. Education, experience, and skills will be considered for placement.
