About the role

This Opportunity WSP is searching for a On-Call Solid Waste (landfill) and Coal Combustion Residuals (CCR) Construction Quality Assurance (CQA) Engineering Technician to join our Civil, Ground Engineering & Materials team in Michigan. The preferred home office locations are Holland, Lansing, Bay City, or Novi.

Responsibilities

  • Field monitoring, testing, and sampling of soil and aggregate materials
  • Use of a nuclear gauge and drive cylinder for soil density testing
  • Geosynthetics monitoring and testing
  • General construction observation and documentation
  • Interpreting construction documents (construction drawings, technical specifications, and CQA Plans) to confirm projects are completed in accordance with approved plans
  • Supporting environmental or geotechnical investigations and other field-related activities
  • Supporting interaction with contractors and owners in a positive and constructive manner to resolve construction issues
  • Generating complete, accurate, and concise documentation using electronic systems and field/work site notebook
  • Assisting with other field activities as needed including but not limited to conducting field characterization (drilling), stormwater sampling, and groundwater sampling
  • Participating and contributing to daily safety meetings
  • Maintaining quality control standards and procedures for accurate and precise measurement and documentation
  • Performing additional responsibilities as required by business needs

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • 5+ years of related experience
  • Geosynthetics Certification Institute-Inspector Certification Program (GCI-ICP) certification for compacted soil liner and geosynthetics (or the ability to obtain certification)
  • MDOT Construction Materials Testing - Soils or ability to obtain certification
  • MDOT Construction Materials Testing - Concrete or ACI Concrete Field-Testing Technician—Grade I (or the ability to obtain certification)

Qualifications

  • The ability to perform duties within established deadlines while maintaining a high level of accuracy
  • Daily report writing and construction documentation is required
  • The ability to communicate constructively with contractors, owners and Project Managers is essential
  • The ability to meet tight deadlines and work under pressure
  • The ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals, compute rate, ratio, percent, and draw and interpret bar graphs
  • An analytical mindset to exercise sound judgement in evaluating situations and making decisions
  • A proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies
  • The ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek
  • The ability to work both independently and as part of a team, self-motivation, and strong work ethic
  • The ability to regularly lift and/or move up to 49 pounds unaided and 50-100 pounds with assistance and/or proper engineering controls
  • The ability to speak and hear, stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and walk up/down slopes
  • Basic proficiency with business writing, office automation and communication software, technology, and tools
  • Proficient self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment
  • The ability to work up to 12-hours outdoors in hot or cold environments safely
  • Valid U.S driver’s license and satisfactory driving record
