About the role

This position involves hands-on highway maintenance and repair work, operating heavy equipment, and performing seasonal duties to ensure safe and efficient roadways.

Responsibilities

• Hands-on maintenance of traffic and flagging
• Highway maintenance and repair work activities, including:
  • Pothole patching
  • Spreading berm
  • Repairing guardrails
  • Crack sealing
  • Litter pick-up
  • Drainage work
  • Vegetation management (weed eating, brush cutting, mowing)
• Operation of heavy equipment (e.g., dump truck, loader) and hand tools (e.g., chainsaw)
• Perform snow and ice operations
• Operate basic equipment and perform general highway maintenance duties, including:
  • Constructing, improving, maintaining, repairing, and cleaning highways and right-of-ways
  • Excavating and grading ditches
  • Digging channels and cleaning waterways
  • Cutting brush, grass, and other vegetation
  • Applying chemicals to vegetation
  • Patching and sealing berm and pavement
  • Mixing mortar and concrete
  • Shoveling backfill
  • Installing and repairing catch basins and stream channels
  • Completing other drainage work
  • Screening bleeding surfaces
  • Reshaping and digging ditches and trenches
  • Pouring hot tar
  • Removing trash
  • Mowing grass
  • Moving and loading supplies and materials
• Perform snow and ice control and related maintenance duties, including operating:
  • Snow plow with spreader
  • Brine dispensing equipment
  • Dump truck with attachments
• Maintain, repair, and install traffic signs and pavement markings on interstate, federal, and state highways
• Perform emergency response and clean-up
• Perform traffic control, including:
  • Flagging traffic through work zones or around accident sites
  • Setting lane closures
  • Placing high water signs
  • Erecting barricades
• Receive training in construction inspection activities and operation of standard and complex equipment
• Perform minor repairs and maintenance on equipment, including:
  • Sharpening, sanding, and painting
  • Refueling and lubricating
  • Checking tires for wear and pressure
  • Replacing light bulbs
  • Washing and cleaning trucks and equipment
• Change tailgates and snowplow blades
• Conduct pre-trip inspections of equipment
• Perform miscellaneous labor and clerical tasks, including:
  • Operating two-way radio/base station
  • Telephoning crews for emergencies
  • Cleaning offices and garage
  • Keeping daily records and logs (e.g., fuel sheets, material check sheets)
  • Responding to general inquiries from the public
  • Assisting stranded motorists
  • Loading and unloading freight
  • Arranging stock in warehouse
  • Moving equipment

Qualifications

• Formal education in arithmetic, including addition, subtraction, decimals, percentages, and fractions
• Ability to read, write, and speak common English vocabulary
• 3 months of training or experience in the operation of basic equipment
• Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), Class “B”, with a tanker endorsement and without air brake restrictions
• Authorization to work in the United States
