SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

Under general supervision, is responsible for making ready, operating, and maintaining offset printing, dry printing, plate-making and photography equipment for a variety of reproduction activities. Incumbent performs other related duties and required.

EXEMPLARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Operates offset-duplicating machines to reproduce single or multi-color copies of charts, graphs, forms, photographs, printed and similar materials according to oral instructions or layout and stock specifications on job order.
  • Receives and examines job orders to determine press operating time, quantity to be printed, and stock specifications.
  • Makes ready assigned work area and offset printing equipment by such activities as restocking paper supplies, refilling inks, chemicals, and liquids, making appropriate control adjustments, and so forth.
  • Operates copy camera to prepare negatives for offset plates.
  • Runs sample sheet to determine printing defects and corrects defects and/or blocks out undesirable portions.
  • Operates press to print production run.
  • Maintains and cleans plates and cylinders at end of run.
  • Performs minor repairs and adjustments on the presses and machinery using handtools.
  • May operate auxiliary equipment, such as collator, addressing, folding, stapling, paper punching, cutting and perforating machines.
  • Answers telephones and greets walk-in customers.
  • Takes and verifies job orders, making not of special instructions and/or unusual specifications.
  • Maintains accurate job order, work status and completion records.
  • May prepare cost quotations.
  • Inputs data, looks up orders and logs out orders on the computer.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

  • Education/Experience: Any combination equivalent to education and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and experience would be:
  • - Equivalent to a high school diploma;
  • - Six (6) months to one (1) year of experience comparable to an Offset Machine Operator Trainee.
  • Knowledge of: Reading, writing, basic math, and verbal communications; offset printing, dry-printing, plate-making and copy photography equipment operations and care; safe work practices; equipment problem solving.
  • Skill at: Operating and adjusting reproduction equipment so as to secure neat, clear, and even impressions, making minor repairs to reproduction equipment; operating auxiliary equipment such as collators, folders, cutters, etc.; following oral and written instructions; working effectively within deadlines; lifting and carrying large and heavy objects; working efficiently in an environment consisting of frequent interruptions, dust, fumes, and noise; dealing appropriately with confidential material; working cooperatively with others.
