Officer Unarmed PRN

About the role

Ensures a safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors. Patrols hospital property, responds to calls for assistance, and reports on conditions, objects, or persons that may impact security and safety. Mentors and trains security staff and assumes a charge role as needed. Security Officers are essential in a 24/7 environment and may be required to work flexible schedules, including "off-shifts." May obtain and maintain State of Maryland and/or District of Columbia Metropolitan Police Department Special Police Officer (SPO) commission to carry out duties associated with crime control and response as an Unarmed Security Officer.

Responsibilities

• Assists supervisor with daily supervision of the shift, including monitoring the communication center and security officers to ensure duties are performed correctly. Makes on-the-spot corrections when needed.
• Acts as a resource or mentor to security staff and conducts in-service training.
• Assumes charge role as needed and assists with training new associates.
• Collects and secures patient valuables and lost-and-found articles.
• Conducts designated security patrols throughout the facility, including hospital campus/grounds via security motor vehicle or bicycle.
• Observes and monitors conditions, objects, or persons that might require police action. Controls access and inspects packages of those leaving buildings. Reports all safety, security, and law violations.
• Contributes to the achievement of established system and department goals, adhering to policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety regulations. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
• Immediately responds to emergencies, security, and medical code calls.
• Monitors camera surveillance and other security technology systems. Confronts unauthorized persons for questioning as needed.
• Participates in investigations, maintains records, and prepares incident reports. Follows up as needed to bring incidents to closure. Notifies appropriate authorities or superiors and calls for backup assistance as necessary.
• Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams, meetings, and committees. Represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts.
• Utilizes nonviolent crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques to ensure safety. Assists with restraining as needed.
• Testifies at legal proceedings, hearings, and trials. Secures scenes, preserves evidence, detains suspects, and assists law enforcement as directed. Completes written reports and notifies Legal Counsel when subpoenaed.
• Works cross-functionally to ensure safe and secure environments. Assists in developing department goals, objectives, policies, and procedures. Ensures compliance with hospital and governmental regulations.
• Maintains designated security posts and interacts with visitors to ensure quality outcomes for the security department.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED required; Associate's degree preferred.
• If SPO commissioned: minimum of 1 year of satisfactory performance as a Security Officer I at MedStar or 5-7 years of total related security or law enforcement experience (inside or outside MedStar).
• Valid State Driver's License in good standing required.
• MD Special Police Commission (MDSPC) or DC Special Police Officer (SPO) commission preferred.
• Must satisfy ongoing training requirements to maintain SPO commission in Maryland and/or DC.
• IAHSS Certification as a Security Officer (Basic or Advanced) preferred.
• Must successfully complete all MedStar initial training related to violence prevention, de-escalation, and crisis prevention intervention.
• CPR certification for healthcare providers (AHA or American Red Cross) within 90 days required.
• Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit.

Pay

This position has a hiring range of USD $18.70 - USD $32.72 per hour.
