About the role

To promote a safe environment for the campus, to perform public relations with students, faculty, staff, and visitors, to work cooperatively with the Department of Environmental Health and Safety in promoting college wide safety initiatives, to maintain order at on-campus and satellite facilities, pursuant to College policies, state, and federal law.

Responsibilities

• Respond to calls for service and provide emergency and non-emergency assistance.
• Protect personnel and property within the campus boundaries, including the surrounding community.
• Conduct investigations as required.
• Respond to medical emergencies and provide care as needed.
• Enforce local, state, and college criminal, traffic, and parking statutes and regulations.
• Maintain order at on-campus and satellite facilities.
• Perform felony and misdemeanor arrests, as necessary.
• Handle extensive confidential information and records.
• Work with limited direct supervision, either independently or as a team.
• Train and instruct other officers on methods and procedures.
• Use deadly force and follow the use of force guidelines.
• Aid the Department of Environmental Health and Safety in supporting their role in College safety and programs.

Related Duties

• Establish and maintain rapport with College personnel, students, the public, and community agencies, as necessary.
• Act as Critical Incident Commander until properly relieved by supervising officer.
• Aid individuals by providing information, directions, and general assistance wherever possible.
• Report fire and safety hazards.
• Carry out duties consistent with College policies and regulations.
• Secure doors, windows and other structures.
• Testify in the court of law.
• Wear and maintain appropriate uniform.
• Maintain current training and certifications.
• Work with computers using various software applications and maintain certification in L.E.A.D.S. computer use.
• Review and maintain daily activity logs and reports.
• Obtain sensitive information for reports, then generate and prepare reports for court documentation and internal dissemination for the College.
• Provide assistance to local police departments upon their request.
• Learn and maintain extensive knowledge in criminal code statutes.
• Handle and maintain various weapons recovered from suspects.
• Learn and maintain extensive knowledge of vehicle code statutes.
• Drive a motor vehicle under emergency and non-emergency conditions.
• Collect and handle evidence from criminal and traffic accident scenes.
• Raise and lower campus flags.
• Handle and operate speed-calculating (radar) equipment.
• Handle and operate fire extinguishers.
• Monitor weather conditions and provide warning for inclement weather and notice to the public.
• Answer after-hours phone for all incoming calls for the campus.
• Monitor several police frequencies for needed assistance and officer safety information.
• Monitor maintenance radio frequency for needed assistance.
• Monitor and respond to campus burglar alarms, holdup alarms, and boiler house alarms.

• Requirements For Currently Certified Or Previously Certified Officer:
  • High School diploma.
  • U.S. Citizen.
  • Current certification as an Illinois Law Enforcement officer is required or the ability to be recertified by Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board; if previously attended an Illinois state certified police academy or the ability to be certified by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board; if attended an out of state certified police academy.
  • Valid F.O.I.D. Card or the ability to attain one.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age upon date of hire.
  • Possess a valid Illinois driver's license or be able to obtain one if moving from another state.
  • Successful completion of written testing, oral interview, background investigation, psychological evaluation, drug screen and medical exam are necessary.
  • No record of felony convictions or a crime involving moral turpitude or misdemeanor(s) that would prohibit the ability to obtain Illinois State Certification from the Illinois Law Enforcement Training Standards Board.
  • Have no disqualifying Professional Misconduct reports through ITLESB.
• Requirements For Police Recruit Officer:
  • High School Diploma.
  • U.S. Citizen.
  • Be at least 21 years of age upon date of hire.
  • Possess a valid Illinois driver's license or be able to obtain one if moving from another state.
  • Valid F.O.I.D. Card or the ability to obtain one.
  • Candidates are required to have an uncorrected vision of minimum 20/40 with both eyes open and an aided corrected vision of 20/20 as well not being color blind.
  • Proof of successful completion of a valid Police Officer Wellness Evaluation Report (POWER) Test submitted with application.
  • Test cards will be accepted from any authorized POWER Test administrator.
  • Successful completion of written testing, oral interview, background investigation, psychological evaluation, drug screen and medical exam are necessary.
  • No record of felony convictions or a crime involving moral turpitude or misdemeanor(s) that would prohibit the ability to obtain Illinois State Certification from the Illinois Law Enforcement Training Standards Board.
