About the role
This is a position with an off-campus agency as a Lifeguard, reporting to the Aquatics Director. The role is available to students eligible for Work Study Fall 2026 and requires onsite presence at a designated work location in Flint, MI.
Responsibilities
- Ensure the safety of all swimmers and observers in the pool area while maintaining a clean and fun environment.
- Perform basic first aid care, patron surveillance, and injury prevention.
- Arrive to shifts on time; shifts may start as early as 5:30 AM and end as late as 9:00 PM, including weekend availability.
- Engage with patrons by smiling, greeting by name, introducing yourself, asking questions, sharing stories, and connecting people to staff and members.
- Support and affirm staff and members, and invite participation in community opportunities.
- Be on deck and ready to lifeguard on time; enforce pool rules and policies.
- Follow opening and closing procedures, maintain a neat pool deck, and scan the pool(s) effectively while on duty.
- Prevent injuries by informing patrons of rules and ensuring compliance; provide customer service where possible.
- Follow all Red Cross lifeguarding guidelines, arrive 10 minutes early, and wear the proper uniform.
- Work professionally and disturb patrons only when necessary; provide emergency care as needed and assist with building medical emergencies.
- Complete daily checklists, communicate emergencies to the Aquatics Director, and take and record chemical readings legibly.
- Complete assigned online trainings on time and maintain physical readiness by completing a weekly 500-yard swim.
- Attend all training sessions and monthly in-services; perform any unique duties requested by a supervisor.
- Adhere to policies related to boundaries with children, attend required abuse risk management training, and follow procedures for high-risk activities.
- Report suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations; follow mandated abuse reporting requirements.
Requirements
- Must be eligible for Work Study Fall 2026 and a current UM-Flint student.
- Must be 18 years of age.
- Must possess the following certifications prior to the first day of shift: American Red Cross Lifeguard, CPR, and First Aid.
- Must meet Red Cross Lifeguard Certification and swimming requirements.
- Ability to speak fluent English, read and write English, stand/sit/walk, bend/stoop/twist/push/pull, use cleaning chemicals, lift over 25 lbs, see clearly, and work in environments with air conditioning or non-air conditioning and noise levels over 50 decibels.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively under stress, make good decisions and judgments, and engage with people in ways that promote the organization’s mission.
Schedule
Shifts may start as early as 5:30 AM and end as late as 9:00 PM, with weekend availability.
Pay
$16.00 per hour.
