The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) oversees building and maintaining the nation’s 5th largest interstate system and the 3rd largest number of bridges. Responsibilities

• Hands-on maintenance of traffic and flagging
• Highway maintenance and repair work activities (e.g., pothole patching, spread berm, repair guardrails, crack seal, litter pick-up, drainage, vegetation management such as weed eating, brush cutting, and mowing)
• Operation of heavy equipment (e.g., dump truck, loader) and hand tools (e.g., chainsaw)
• Perform snow & ice operations
• Construct, improve, maintain, repair, and clean highways, roadways, and right-of-ways
• Excavate and grade ditches; dig channels; clean waterways
• Cut brush, grass, and other vegetation; apply chemicals to vegetation
• Patch and seal berm and pavement; mix mortar and concrete; shovel backfill
• Install and repair catch basins, stream channels, and complete other drainage work
• Screen bleeding surface; reshape/dig ditches/trenches; pour hot tar
• Remove trash; clean and repair highways, roadways, and right-of-ways
• Mow grass; move and load supplies and materials
• Operate snow plow with spreader, brine dispensing equipment, dump truck with attachments
• Maintain, repair, and install traffic signs and pavement markings on interstate, federal, and state highways
• Repair, replace, and straighten street and traffic signs and other route markers; install and repair guardrails
• Perform emergency response and clean-up; perform traffic control (e.g., flag traffic, set lane closures, place high water signs, erect barricades)
• Perform minor repairs and maintenance on equipment (e.g., sharpen, sand, paint, refuel, lubricate, check tires for wear and pressure, replace light bulbs, wash and clean trucks and equipment)
• Change tailgates and snowplow blades; conduct pre-trip inspections of equipment
• Operate two-way radio/base station; telephone crews for emergencies
• Clean offices and garage; keep daily records and logs (e.g., fuel sheets, material check sheets)
• Respond to general inquiries from the public (e.g., give directions, explain traffic delays, explain work underway); assist stranded motorists
• Perform general labor and maintenance functions at garage; load and unload freight; arrange stock in warehouse; move equipment

Requirements

• Formal education in arithmetic that includes addition, subtraction, decimals, percentages, and fractions
• Ability to read, write, and speak common English vocabulary
• Three months of training or three months of experience in operation of basic equipment, or equivalent
• Valid Commercial Driver’s License at the appropriate level to operate motorized equipment regulated by section 4506 of the Ohio Revised Code
