Ocean Export Specialist
About the role
JAS is an international, non-asset-based supply chain services and solutions company offering air and ocean freight forwarding, contract logistics, customs brokerage, distribution, inbound logistics, truckload brokerage, and other supply chain management services including consulting, purchase order coordination, and customized management services.
The ocean export specialist facilitates the movement of products, equipment, and materials out of the country via ocean freight in accordance with organizational policy and procedures, and complies with relevant local, country, and international laws and processes. The role provides customer service to exporting customers including bookings, rates, document production, accounting, agent interaction, and problem solving.
Responsibilities
- Prepare and coordinate documentation for efficient, cost-effective, and lawful execution of all ocean export activities.
- Coordinate cargo pick-up and transfer; monitor status.
- Communicate with export-related authorities, customers, and suppliers across relevant territories to ensure efficient, positive, and lawful relations and activities.
- Manage and update carrier/vendor rates; obtain spot rates when necessary.
- Communicate with overseas agents and clients in a timely manner, including pre-alerts, rate requests, and shipment status updates.
- Track shipments and update customers and agents on status.
- Create and maintain customer files.
- Handle customer invoicing and payables approval.
- Audit files to ensure accuracy and completion.
- Interact with coworkers in a professional and courteous manner.
- Assist other departments as needed or when requested by the department or branch manager.
Qualifications
- Minimum 3–5 years of experience handling ocean export shipments.
- Experience in the freight forwarding industry is preferred.
- Previous knowledge of Cargo Wise (C1) is preferred.
- Ability to think proactively and address work challenges with diplomacy using effective problem-resolution skills.
- Ability to perform essential duties without posing a direct threat to the health or safety of self or others.
- Ability to interact positively and effectively with coworkers, subordinates, and supervisors.
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or GED is preferred.
- Experience in the freight forwarding industry is a plus.
- Ability to work in a fluid environment and effectively deal with unexpected situations.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Geographical knowledge is preferred.
