Responsibilities

The Industrial Safety & Health Engineer plays a fundamental role in maintaining these environments. This role is focused on identifying and evaluating safety and health hazards, preventing workplace-related injuries and illnesses, responding to EHS concerns, and ensuring compliance with safety standards. Through this work, the role strengthens FSU’s risk posture and helps ensure a safe, healthy campus environment.

This position assists in evaluating and recommending controls for potentially unsafe environmental, health, and safety conditions at the University, applying knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations and University policies.

As part of the Environmental Health & Safety team, you will specifically:

  • Responsible for administering and providing guidance for occupational safety programs. Some examples include lifting devices (portable cranes, hoists, slings), powered industrial trucks, PPE hazard assessments, new equipment startup, and EHS audits.
  • Support the development of new EHS programs and the improvement of existing programs.
  • Supports the development and delivery of EHS training to Facilities staff.
  • Evaluate work environments to identify potential health and safety risks and hazards. Develop and implement corrective actions to address hazards. Provide recommendations to Facilities and other stakeholders for corrective actions to ensure compliance with regulations and University requirements.
  • Collaborate with EHS and Facilities staff to evaluate program gaps. Support risk and self-assessments to identify program gaps and opportunities for improvements. Perform other tasks to support the improvement of the safety culture and management system structure.
  • Collaborate with EHS, Facilities departments, and University staff to conduct comprehensive investigations for incidents, including injuries, near misses, safety concerns, etc. Respond to workplace emergencies or accidents to safeguard life and property damage, and to investigate the root cause and contributing factors of incidents.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and two years of related safety and health experience or a high school diploma or equivalent and six years of experience. (Note: or a combination of post-high-school education and experience equal to 6 years.)
  • Strong communication and customer-service skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across departments and with external customers.
  • Demonstrated ability to make sound decisions under pressure and maintain operational continuity during emergencies or adverse conditions.
  • Working knowledge of EHS regulations.
  • Experience building a positive safety culture.
