Observation Assistant, Emergency Department, 24 Hours, Evenings

About the role

This position is for a caregiver in the Emergency Department of UMass Memorial Health. It involves assisting high-risk patients, performing safety checks, and supporting patient care.

Responsibilities

• Provides constant observation of high-risk patients.
• Assists patients with undressing, removing items, securing belongings, and escorting them.
• Monitors patients every 15 minutes and reports any changes in behavior or requests for assistance.
• Removes potentially harmful items from the patient’s room and reports any unsafe environmental issues.
• Engages patients in activities and maintains work area in a neat and orderly manner.
• Performs various duties to support patient care and department operations.

Requirements

• High School Graduate or equivalent.
• Current Basic Life Support or Heart Saver certification.
• De-escalation training completed.
• Experience in patient care, mental health, or public safety preferred.

Qualifications

• Communication skills: Ability to read, write, speak effectively in English and have good interpersonal skills.
• Ability to remain calm under stress or in emergency situations.
• Previous experience in patient care, mental health/intellectual disabilities, teaching/child care/special needs students, or public safety.

Skills

The position offers a competitive salary range of $18.20 - $24.45 per hour, with the final offer varying based on experience, skills, qualifications, and internal equity considerations. The schedule includes holidays, weekends, and evenings, with a shift of 3p-11p.
