Observation Assistant, Emergency Department, 24 Hours, Evenings
About the role
This position is for a caregiver in the Emergency Department of UMass Memorial Health. It involves assisting high-risk patients, performing safety checks, and supporting patient care.
Responsibilities
- Provides constant observation of high-risk patients.
- Assists patients with undressing, removing items, securing belongings, and escorting them.
- Monitors patients every 15 minutes and reports any changes in behavior or requests for assistance.
- Removes potentially harmful items from the patient’s room and reports any unsafe environmental issues.
- Engages patients in activities and maintains work area in a neat and orderly manner.
- Performs various duties to support patient care and department operations.
Requirements
- High School Graduate or equivalent.
- Current Basic Life Support or Heart Saver certification.
- De-escalation training completed.
- Experience in patient care, mental health, or public safety preferred.
Qualifications
- Communication skills: Ability to read, write, speak effectively in English and have good interpersonal skills.
- Ability to remain calm under stress or in emergency situations.
- Previous experience in patient care, mental health/intellectual disabilities, teaching/child care/special needs students, or public safety.
Skills
- De-escalation techniques.
