About the Unit

We are a 13-bed unit with 4 overflow antepartum rooms, 2 OR suites, and a new 4-bed OB-ED. We provide 24/7 coverage by a Hospitalist and a team of physicians. The unit cares for laboring mothers, preterm mothers greater than 20 weeks, and postpartum mothers needing readmission. Our goal is to adhere to AWHONN standards with staffing ratios that include:

  • 1:2 for laboring patients
  • 1:1 for active labor or C-section
  • 1:3 for antepartum patients
  • 1:4 for triage/OB-ED

We deliver patient-centered care through collaboration across the entire healthcare team.

Responsibilities

Responsible for handling instruments, supplies, and equipment during obstetrical operations in the Labor and Delivery Operating Room. Anticipates the needs of the surgeon and ensures quality patient care while maintaining the sterile field. Functions as a scrub person on the surgical team.

  • Checks supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedures, including review and use of preference cards.
  • Assists with room setup, including opening sterile supplies.
  • Sets up sterile tables with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications/solutions.
  • Performs surgical counts with the circulator.
  • Actively participates in the procedure pause/time-out.
  • Gowns and gloves the surgeon and assistants.
  • Assists in draping the sterile field.
  • Passes instruments to the surgeon during procedures.
  • Maintains the highest standard of sterile technique.
  • Prepares sterile dressings.
  • Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization.

Performs patient care duties in Labor and Delivery under the direction of a registered nurse:

  • Supports licensed staff by performing delegated treatments or procedures (e.g., clipping, prepping surgical site, positioning patients) safely and accurately.
  • Modifies approaches to patients as needed for specific procedures/tasks.
  • Uses appropriate equipment and resources when performing procedures.
  • Provides comfort and safety measures for patients.

Additional essential duties:

  • Prepares case carts according to procedure and preference cards.
  • Orders supplies and linen for Labor & Delivery.
  • Serves as a supportive guide for new employees.
  • Maintains competency in surgical aseptic technique, perioperative procedures, and surgical scrub for C-sections, D&Cs, and vaginal deliveries.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED Required
  • Graduate from a Surgical Technologist training program Required
  • OR 1 year of previous operating room experience as a Surgical/Delivery Room Technologist Required
  • OR 3 years of experience providing direct patient care in a clinical setting Required

Certifications

  • BCLS - Basic Life Support Required upon hire
  • NRP - Neonatal Resuscitation Preferred
