OB Certified Surgical Technologist, Family Birth Center

Pay range: USD $24.04–$37.26 per hour.

About the role

Full-time, night shift (6:00 pm – 6:30 am). The Certified OB Surgical Technologist (CST) performs scrub duties for scheduled and unscheduled cesarean sections, assists with draping, and utilizes instruments for OB-related surgical procedures. Demonstrates knowledge of sterile technique and sterilization procedures.

Responsibilities

• Ensures sterile environment and applies sterile and safe techniques.
• Assists in preparation and draping of the patient.
• Assists with operating room setup.
• Wears lead aprons during radiological surgical procedures; always wears eye protection and personal protective equipment using hands-free zones.
• Reports unsafe conditions.
• Disassembles and decontaminates instruments/supplies.
• Performs as a scrub nurse or assistant, anticipating surgeon’s needs throughout procedures.
• Plans for procedures by reviewing case cart and resource map.
• Sets up and passes instruments, sutures, and supplies during surgical procedures.
• Identifies specimens with the surgeon and circulating nurse, places in appropriately labeled containers, and transports to lab pickup area.
• Transports surgery patients as needed.
• Utilizes supplies and equipment in a cost-effective manner.
• Maintains adequate supplies/par levels for assigned specialty items (e.g., mesh, staplers, special suture, ortho systems).
• Updates resource maps on an ongoing basis.
• Collaborates with RN for correct sponge, needle, and instrument counts.
• Achieves goals identified at previous annual or 90-day evaluation.
• Maintains proficiency in specialties and flexibility in all other areas.
• Attends meetings and in-services to further self-growth.
• Completes required Computer-Based Learnings (CBLs) on NetLearning.
• Seeks information from literature and resource persons for all specialties.
• Maintains requirements for certification.
• Assists in instructing staff, students, and new employees.
• Adheres to departmental/DMH policies.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
• Regular attendance and punctuality; unscheduled hours and weekly stay-lates.
• Participation in 24-hour call rotation.

Requirements

• Graduate of a recognized Surgical Technologist program, or in the last semester of an approved program.
• National certification and CPR certification required within 6 months of graduation or start date of employment; certification must not lapse (re-certification required within 3 months of expiration).
• Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies for security operations.
• Completion of additional training or demonstration of competency in skills for all age groups and populations served.
• Knowledge of anatomical structures and skills in tissue handling, retracting, clamping, cutting, suturing, and exposure retracting.
• Ability to monitor and assess performance for improvements or corrective action.
• Monitors effectiveness and accuracy of surgical equipment and devices.

Environmental Factors

• Frequent exposure to uncomfortable temperature levels, potentially injurious elements, and hazardous chemicals.

• Assists in lifting and supporting patients/equipment (possibly 300 lbs. or more).
• Frequently lifts weights of 5 to 50 pounds.
• Frequently uses step stools to gain height for satisfactory performance.
• Regularly required to possess visual/auditory acuity to meet job demands.
