About the role

The Solicitor General Division of the Office of the Texas Attorney General offers up to four prestigious, one-year Coleman Fellowships, named after Gregory S. Coleman, Texas’s first Solicitor General and a preeminent appellate advocate. Coleman Fellows collaborate closely with Office of Solicitor General attorneys to represent Texas’s interests before appellate courts. Duties include preparing briefs and petitions for cases in the United States Supreme Court, the Texas Supreme Court, and federal and state courts of appeals; recommending whether to authorize appeals; and assisting with preparation for oral arguments. The Office endeavors to ensure that licensed Coleman Fellows have the opportunity to lead briefing and present oral argument in at least one appeal.

Responsibilities

• Represent the state’s interests before state or federal appellate courts
• Research and draft briefs
• Prepare attorneys for oral arguments
• Analyze complex factual and legal issues related to appellate matters, including dispositive pleadings, jury charges, moot-verdict and post-trial motions, and appellate briefs and motions
• Provide legal advice, counsel, and assistance to client state agencies
• Research and analyze legal sources such as statutes, case law, administrative records, opinions, articles, treaties, property titles, and rules and regulations
• Prepare, review, and edit pleadings, motions, briefs, abstracts, petitions, legal correspondence, and other legal documents
• Perform related work as assigned
• Maintain relevant knowledge necessary to perform essential job functions
• Attend work regularly in compliance with agreed-upon work schedule
• Ensure security and confidentiality of sensitive and/or protected information
• Comply with all agency policies and procedures, including those pertaining to ethics and integrity

Requirements

• Graduated from an accredited law school with a Juris Doctor degree (J.D.)
• Ability to handle multiple tasks, prioritize, and meet deadlines
• Effective oral and written communication skills
• Ability to exercise sound judgment and effective decision making
• Ability to receive and respond positively to constructive feedback
• Ability to work cooperatively with others in a professional office environment
• Ability to provide excellent customer service
• Ability to work in person at assigned OAG work location, perform all assigned tasks at designated OAG workspace, and collaborate in person with coworkers for the entirety of every work week (unless on approved leave)
• Ability to arrange for personal transportation for business-related travel
• Ability to work more than 40 hours as needed and in compliance with the FLSA
• Ability to lift and relocate 30 lbs.
• Ability to travel (including overnight travel) up to 5%
