General Description

The Solicitor General Division of the Office of the Texas Attorney General offers up to four prestigious, one-year Coleman Fellowships, named after Gregory S. Coleman, Texas's first Solicitor General.

Duties

• Preparing briefs and petitions in cases on appeal in the United States Supreme Court, the Texas Supreme Court, and federal and state courts of appeals
• Preparing recommendations to the Solicitor General regarding authorization of appeals
• Aiding attorneys in the Office in preparing for oral arguments

Essential Position Functions

• Representing the state's interests before state or federal appellate courts
• Assisting in researching and drafting briefs
• Assisting in preparing attorneys for oral arguments
• Assisting with the analysis of complex factual and legal issues related to appellate matters
• Providing legal advice, counsel, and assistance to client state agencies
• Researching and analyzing legal sources such as statutes, case law, administrative records, opinions, articles, treaties, property titles, and rules and regulations
• Preparing, reviewing, and editing pleadings, motions, briefs, abstracts, petitions, legal correspondence, and other legal documents
• Performing related work as assigned
• Maintaining relevant knowledge necessary to perform essential job functions
• Attending work regularly in compliance with agreed-upon work schedule
• Ensuring security and confidentiality of sensitive and/or protected information
• Complying with all agency policies and procedures, including those pertaining to ethics and integrity

Minimum Qualifications

• Graduated from an accredited law school with a Juris Doctor degree (J.D.)
• Skills in handling multiple tasks, prioritizing, and meeting deadlines
• Effective oral and written communication skills
• Sound judgment and effective decision-making abilities
• Ability to receive and respond positively to constructive feedback
• Cooperative working ability in a professional office environment
• Excellent customer service skills
• Ability to work in person at assigned OAG work location, perform all assigned tasks at designated OAG work space within OAG work location, and perform in-person work with coworkers (e.g., collaborating, training, mentoring) for the entirety of every work week (unless on approved leave)
• Ability to arrange for personal transportation for business-related travel
• Ability to work more than 40 hours as needed and in compliance with the FLSA
• Ability to lift and relocate 30 lbs.
• Ability to travel (including overnight travel) up to 5%
