Duties
- Prepares briefs and petitions in cases on appeal in the United States Supreme Court, the Texas Supreme Court, and federal and state courts of appeals
- Prepares recommendations to the Solicitor General regarding authorization of appeals
- Affords assistance to attorneys in the Office in preparing for oral arguments
Essential Position Functions
- Affords assistance in representing the state’s interests before state or federal appellate courts
- Affords assistance in researching and drafting briefs
- Affords assistance in preparing attorneys for oral arguments
- Affords assistance with the analysis of complex factual and legal issues related to appellate matters
- Affords assistance in analyzing legal sources such as statutes, case law, administrative records, opinions, articles, treaties, property titles, and rules and regulations
- Affords assistance in preparing, reviewing, and editing pleadings, motions, briefs, abstracts, petitions, legal correspondence, and other legal documents
- Affords assistance in attending work regularly in compliance with agreed-upon work schedule
- Affords assistance in ensuring security and confidentiality of sensitive and/or protected information
- Affords assistance in complying with all agency policies and procedures, including those pertaining to ethics and integrity
Qualifications
- Education: Graduated from an accredited law school with a Juris Doctor degree (J.D.)
- Skills: Handles multiple tasks, prioritizes, and meets deadlines; communicates effectively orally and in writing; exercises sound judgment and makes effective decisions; receives and responds positively to constructive feedback; works cooperatively with others in a professional office environment; provides excellent customer service; arranges for personal transportation for business-related travel; works more than 40 hours as needed and in compliance with the FLSA; lifts and relocates 30 lbs.; travels (including overnight travel) up to 5%
- Preferred Qualifications: Judicial Clerkship
