About the role
The O&M / Instrumentation, Controls & Electrical (IC&E) Technician supports the safe, reliable, and efficient operation and maintenance of Canyon Peak Power Plant. This position performs plant startups, shutdowns, equipment monitoring, and routine operations while providing advanced IC&E support for instrumentation, controls, automation, and electrical systems. The Technician troubleshoots, calibrates, repairs, and maintains plant equipment to support reliable generation and rapid response to changing system demands.
Responsibilities
- Inspect, test, troubleshoot, and maintain electrical systems from 24V DC through 13.8kV AC, including MCCs, transformers, relays, breakers, motors, VFDs, and switchgear.
- Calibrate, troubleshoot, and repair process instrumentation, including flow, pressure, temperature, and analytical equipment, using appropriate test equipment.
- Troubleshoot and maintain PLCs, turbine and plant control systems, DCS/SCADA equipment, control cards, wiring, terminations, and associated automation systems.
- Interpret electrical schematics, P&IDs, control logic diagrams, and technical documentation to diagnose faults and restore equipment functionality.
- Perform preventive and corrective IC&E maintenance and support equipment inspections, commissioning, outages, and emergency maintenance activities.
- Maintain accurate CMMS records, calibration documentation, drawings, and other technical records associated with completed work.
- Coordinate IC&E activities with plant personnel, contractors, and OEM representatives while ensuring compliance with safety and quality requirements.
- Start, operate, monitor, and shut down six GE LM2500 simple-cycle gas turbines, auxiliary systems, and associated electrical and mechanical equipment in accordance with plant procedures.
- Perform equipment rounds and monitor temperatures, pressures, vibration, fluid levels, operating hours, and other parameters to identify abnormal conditions.
- Operate and monitor auxiliary equipment, including air compressors, generator cooling systems, and locally controlled electrical and mechanical equipment.
- Perform operational testing, inspections, minor repairs, adjustments, and basic mechanical troubleshooting to maintain equipment reliability and availability.
- Identify and respond to abnormal operating conditions, taking appropriate corrective action within established procedures and promptly communicating equipment issues.
- Prepare and isolate equipment for maintenance and assist plant personnel during planned and forced outages, troubleshooting, repairs, and other maintenance activities.
- Maintain accurate operating logs and CMMS documentation and perform other duties as assigned to support safe and reliable plant operations.
- Perform other tasks as assigned by the Plant Manager, contributing to overall plant efficiency and effectiveness.
- Stand for extended periods of time, climb stairs and ladders, work from elevated platforms and walkways at varying heights, and routinely lift up to 50 pounds.
- Work in a power plant environment that may involve entering confined spaces, crawling through narrow areas, handling hazardous materials, and exposure to fumes, extreme temperatures, and noise.
- Work may include high heat near equipment and varying outdoor weather conditions.
- Use protective equipment such as hard hats, safety glasses, eye protection, air masks/respirators, ear protection, chemical suits, flame‑resistant clothing, hot gloves, high‑voltage protective gear, and fall protection as required.
- Undergo fit testing for respirators when required.
- Adhere to strict smoking restrictions in and around the facility.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required; an associate degree or technical training in electrical, instrumentation, controls, or a related field is preferred.
- Power generation or similar industrial experience, preferably within natural gas‑fired peaking or simple‑cycle power generation facilities.
- Strong knowledge of electrical systems from 24V DC through 13.8kV, including MCCs, transformers, relays, breakers, motors, VFDs, and switchgear.
- Advanced experience
