About the Role

This is a temporary, full-time, non-exempt position based in Gerlach, NV, running from August to October 2026. The Housing Crew is responsible for preparing and maintaining lodging facilities for visitors across multiple properties in Gerlach. The role involves daily cleaning duties, supply management, and coordination with the Gerlach Residence Manager and Maintenance team to ensure facilities are clean, safe, and well-stocked.

Responsibilities

Daily Cleaning Duties for all Lodging Facilities (70%)

  • Stock and sanitize bathrooms: bleach urinals, toilets, and showers; ensure hand soaps are full, toilet paper is stocked, sinks are clean, mirrors are wiped down, and shower curtains are laundered twice a week (or more if needed).
  • Thoroughly clean bedrooms and indoor/outdoor common areas: wipe down and sanitize all surface areas, clean behind items, organize misplaced belongings, sweep, mop, vacuum, and remove trash.
  • Clean refrigerators, sinks, and any forgotten dishes; ensure kitchen areas are stocked with supplies (hand soap, dish soap, trash bags, etc.). Remove forgotten or rotting food.
  • Deep clean facilities daily, spending up to two hours on areas requiring extra attention.
  • Check restrooms multiple times daily to ensure they are clean and stocked with toilet paper and hand soap.
  • Create and maintain organized areas for guests to leave belongings and a designated lost-and-found spot.
  • Keep all areas free of spills, trash, and safety hazards.
  • Adhere to health and sanitation best practices, ensuring required cleanliness standards are met.
  • Perform daily checks on lights and appliances; report any issues to the facilities maintenance team.

Schedule and Tracking (15%)

  • Work with the Housing Crew Supervisor to create a weekly schedule based on visitors’ arrival and departure dates; attend daily check-ins to plan activities and address changes.
  • Track and maintain the cleanliness of facilities across all properties and provide updates.
  • Manage and track supplies, anticipate needs, and coordinate with the Housing Crew Supervisor to place orders.

Atmosphere and Communication (15%)

  • Create and maintain a respectful, friendly, and comfortable environment, accommodating guests’ diverse needs.
  • Maintain confidentiality and discretion to ensure a safe and comfortable environment for all facility users.
  • Monitor guest behavior to prevent disorderly conduct or facility damage; report safety hazards and maintenance issues immediately.
  • Coordinate with managers to ensure projects are completed, tasks are fulfilled, and facilities are prepared and stocked.
  • Familiarize yourself with and act in accordance with Burning Man’s staff policies, the NVO Compass, Ranch Protocols, and the Housing S.O.P.

Teaching and Learning

  • Assist in creating and maintaining process documentation related to assigned duties.
  • Help acculturate and educate junior staff and volunteers in Burning Man culture and business processes.
  • Pursue ongoing learning in your area of expertise to stay current on emergent knowledge, skills, and processes.

Requirements

  • Ability to work in Gerlach, NV.
  • Experience in hospitality, ideally in a role involving communication with a high volume of facility users.
  • Knowledge of cleaning and sanitation best practices; willingness to apply them consistently.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills; ability to prioritize tasks, log daily activity, and adapt to special circumstances.
  • Proactive and able to work independently without direct supervision.
  • Strong communication skills, with an awareness of the need for discretion and confidentiality.
  • Flexible and understanding attitude.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous attendance at Burning Man and/or familiarity with its culture.
  • Note: If you have gained relevant experience through other means, you are encouraged to apply and share all relevant experience.

Required Licenses/Certifications

  • Valid driver’s license and a good driving record.

Physical Requirements / Work Environment

  • Off-playa: This position requires heavy lifting, bending, kneeling, squatting, and climbing. It is physically demanding and requires good physical health and endurance. Work may involve walking or using transportation to meet with department representatives. Much of the work occurs outdoors in varying weather conditions, with exposure to fumes, airborne particles, and possible temperature extremes.
  • On-playa: This role has no playa-specific responsibilities.

Pay

The anticipated pay rate for this position is $15.00 to $17.00 per hour, dependent on prior experience and geographical location.
