About the role

Assist the kitchen manager, kitchen lead, and/or cook in a variety of tasks, including: food storage, preparation, serving, clean-up, POS (point-of-sale) meal/sales accounting (secondary only), following recipes, and completing production records daily. Follow meal programming nutritional and food safety guidelines as established by Federal-USDA, State, and District mandates.

Pay

Initial wage placement according to NCSD/OSEA Collective Bargaining Agreement (2026-2027 Classified Wage Schedule):

  • Step 2: $19.06/hour
  • Step 3: $20.01/hour
  • Step 4: $21.01/hour
  • Step 5: $22.07/hour
  • Step 6: $23.17/hour
  • Step 7: $24.33/hour
  • Step 8: $25.54/hour
  • Step 9: $26.83/hour

The district contributes to the Oregon Public Employee Retirement System (PERS and OPSRP) on behalf of its employees. Upon eligibility (working at least six full calendar months in a qualifying position), the employee is required to contribute 6% as their employee portion via payroll deduction. Part-time employees working at least six months and 600 hours in a calendar year will qualify.

Schedule

  • Hours: 3.75 hrs/day (.4688 FTE), Part Time, Permanent
  • Work hours: 9:15 AM - 1:00 PM (subject to change depending on department needs)
  • Work calendar: 175 days

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Successful experience in working with culturally diverse families/communities; or demonstrated commitment to strengthening engagement of a diverse community, and skill in communicating with a diverse population.
  • Graduation from high school or equivalent, or at least two years of nutrition experience may substitute for the education requirement.
  • Ability to communicate and maintain good working relations with other employees, students, community representatives, school staff, and nutrition services management.
  • Initiative and ability to follow directions and training from senior personnel, and make sound and logical decisions.
  • Ability to follow required production planners for effective food preparation and service; read and comprehend recipes and directions for equipment use.
  • Maintain valid Food Handlers Card.
  • Customer service skills.
  • Basic computer skills; possess or receive meal-computer/point-of-sale (POS) training.
  • Ability to pass pre-placement drug and physical examinations.

Desired Qualifications

  • Nutrition services experience in a school setting.
  • Bilingual and bicultural skills.
  • Serve Safe Certification.
  • Basic computer knowledge/skills: Navigate internet, email, folder management.

Responsibilities

  • Food Preparation:
    • Store food and equipment in specified locations.
    • Read and comprehend recipes and follow directions for numbers of meals to be served.
    • Gather cooking materials; weigh, measure, and mix ingredients.
    • Slice, chop, dice, and otherwise prepare food products for cooking.
    • Assist with food preparation/cooking in accordance with program standards, including food safety standards (e.g., food stored/prepared/cooked/held/served at proper temperatures).
    • Follow required production planners for effective food preparation and service; read and comprehend recipes and directions for equipment use.
    • Learn and follow regulations/guidelines of School Meal Programs and other associated programs.
    • Complete production records daily.
  • Food Service, Cleaning, and Maintenance:
    • Provide assistance to prepare, place, and present menus according to set standards, including merchandising/marketing standards.
    • Serve food according to set standards, including portion control and customer-service standards.
    • Assist in securing food, supplies, and equipment; protect against loss, theft, or abuse.
    • Clean cooking surfaces, floors, materials, utensils, pots, and pans.
    • Participate in salad bar set-up and dishwashing.
    • Assist with maintaining program record requirements.
    • Substitute/fill-in for other positions when needed.
    • Attend scheduled training.
  • Secondary Schools:
    • Operate POS meal computer.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Nutrition Services Management.
