About the role
The Renal Unit is a 36-bed facility focusing on kidney-related conditions, including acute or chronic kidney disease requiring renal replacement therapy. Nurses here work in teams with ratios of 16 to 1, specializing in post-hemodialysis and ongoing peritoneal dialysis. Collaboration with community nephrologists, family practice providers, and hospitalists is valued to provide comprehensive care.
Responsibilities
- Functions as the unit-based clinical supervisor, overseeing staff direction, patient flow, safety, resource utilization, shift assignments, and overall quality of care.
- Coordinates in-services, continuing education, and mentoring of the clinical staff, particularly new hires.
- Participates in Patient Improvement (PI) activities, collecting data to assess employee performance and participating in staff evaluations.
- Coordinates unit activities, leads daily huddles, and represents the unit at house-wide daily huddles.
- Supervises and evaluates nursing care provided to patients in the assigned clinical department.
- Evaluates the care for each LPN assigned patient upon admission and periodically, ensuring adherence to nursing standards and hospital policies.
- Promotes efficient patient flow, including timely discharges and admissions.
- Maintains a safe environment by enforcing established protocols, policies, and procedures.
- Serves as a clinical resource and subject matter expert for staff.
- Provides just-in-time feedback and accountability as needed, implementing evidence-based practices.
- Rounds on patients, physicians, and employees, maintaining records related to orientation, in-services, and unit competency assessments.
- Maintains performance, patient, and employee satisfaction and financial standards as outlined in the performance evaluation.
- Adheres to productivity, revenue, and expense goals, displaying sound judgment and critical thinking skills in decision-making and problem-solving.
- Maintains effective interdepartmental relationships by collaborating with other unit leaders and departments to achieve common goals.
- Ensures compliance with various quality standards and regulatory agency requirements.
- Facilitates bidirectional communication to ensure timely exchange of information among stakeholders.
- Treats all people (customers and employees) fairly and with respect, fostering a positive environment for recruitment and retention.
- Requires use of electronic mail, time and attendance software, learning management software, and intranet.
- Adheres to DCH Behavioral Standards, including creating positive relationships with patients/families, coworkers, colleagues, and with self.
- Performs essential job functions in a manner that ensures the safety of patients, visitors, and employees.
- Identifies and reduces unsafe practices that could harm patients, visitors, and employees.
- Completes the Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) within 12 months of hire.
Requirements
- Registered Nurse with current Alabama or multistate license required.
- Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider training required.
- Minimum 2 years’ experience as a registered nurse required.
- Specialty nursing experience preferred in applied area.
- Must obtain ACLS, PALS, and TNCC certifications within 6 months of hire.
Qualifications
- Current Alabama or multistate license required.
- BSN preferred, minimum Associates required.
- Ability to read, write, speak, and comprehend English.
