Nursing Support Assistant, 5NW - Hospital Medicine - Hyde Park, Full Time, Night Shift
About the role
Under the leadership of the Manager and Clinical Supervisor, the Nursing Support Assistant performs assigned supportive work in connection with the delivery of patient care, including functional tasks and skills. Utilizes interactive processes to exceed patient, physician, and family expectations while providing high quality, cost effective care. Demonstrates skills and knowledge to provide care according to unit-specific competencies appropriate to the age of patients served. Performs activities supporting daily functions and operations of the patient care unit and healthcare team. Provides constant observation and documentation of assigned patient activity. Works under the direction of the Registered Nurse.
Essential Job Functions
- Provides basic patient care activities including vital signs, enemas, and basic tests such as glucoscan, hemacult, and multistix
- Assists patients with activities of daily living using proper aseptic, isolation, and infection control techniques
- Assists patients with personal hygiene, ambulation, and nourishment/fluids
- Completes procedures as assigned, such as collecting patient specimens and weighing patients
- Assists with discharge and transfer preparation of patients
- Assists in maintenance of the patient environment: makes beds, tidies patient rooms, and prepares rooms for admission and transfer
- Assists with maintenance of supplies/equipment and the environment
- Communicates and accurately documents activities onto proper records or logs
- Initiates CPR and calls a Dr. Cart
- Performs receptionist duties for assigned area as requested
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Must be listed on the IDPH Health Care Worker Registry (HCWR) as an Illinois CNA OR a nursing student who has passed the written competency exam and is listed on the HCWR
- CPR/BLS Certification
- Ability to read and write, perform simple mathematical calculations, follow oral and written instructions, perform a variety of tasks without direct supervision, and perform duties requiring continuous physical effort
- Ability to effectively communicate verbally and/or in written form
- Ability to work in partnership with management and staff
- Occasional lifting may be heavy and awkward, over 50 lbs.
- Moderate to extreme physical effort such as walking, standing, performing CPR, and lifting materials, equipment, objects, and/or patients may be required
- Vision, hearing, and sense of touch must be adequate to enable quick and accurate performance of tasks such as reading small print, defining details, and sending/receiving clear oral communication
- Frequent periods of concentrated or focused attention needed to interpret visual, auditory, and sensory inputs
