Nursing Supervisor RN (Full Time/Nights)

About the role

The Nursing Supervisor is responsible and accountable for the administrative supervision of the hospital in the absence of the senior leadership. They function as in-house administrator utilizing the on-call nursing and hospital senior administrator as needed for consultation. The Nursing Supervisor is responsible and accountable for the management of nursing services and the quality and safety of nursing care provided across the organization. This role incorporates responsibilities of staff management, patient/family/visitor relations, and interdepartmental clinical and non-clinical activities to ensure quality, safe patient care and departmental operations. The Nursing Supervisor is responsible for patient flow and bed assignment throughout the system and coordinates inter-hospital transfers. In collaboration with the senior administrator on call, they initiate the incident command center and reallocate initial resources as appropriate to the crisis demand.

Responsibilities

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Notifies the Nursing and Senior Administrator on call for actual or evolving patient/visitor or staff issues requiring immediate action to prevent harm, injury, or disruption of hospital operations impacting patient safety or care.
  • Demonstrates understanding of situations requiring legal, risk, and public relations input and acts accordingly.
  • Acts as a resource, liaison, and effectively interacts with physicians, staff, patients, and significant others to address and document concerns/issues.
  • Accurately and thoroughly completes shift reports using the SBAR communication tool.
  • Provides management through interpretation and access to nursing and hospital policies and procedures.
  • Ensures awareness of Joint Commission, CMS, DOH, and other regulatory standards to support patient care.
  • Participates in the development of the nursing strategic plan and annual operational goals and objectives.
  • Assists in consistent communication of hospital and nursing operations through unit-based and departmental rounding.
  • Responds to emergent situations (e.g., Rapid Response, Trauma alert, MTP, Code Blue, Code Red).
  • Coordinates and/or assists with organ procurement.
  • Participates in Shared Governance councils/co-councils as leader, co-leader, or participant.

Staffing Responsibilities

  • Identifies the mix and quantity of nursing personnel needed to provide safe, quality patient care for overall unit operations and each shift based on patient needs, staffing matrix, and staff competencies.
  • Reallocates staff as needed to ensure safe, quality care across the nursing organization.
  • Adjusts staffing with attention to financial objectives as appropriate.
  • Assigns sitters and cognitive coaches as needed to assure patient safety.
  • Identifies patients at risk for elopement and assigns appropriate resources and designated units.
  • Collects sick/FMLA calls and adjusts staffing accordingly, noting trends and communicating with the Nurse Manager.
  • Proactively participates in staffing analysis for weekend coverage and communicates trends to Directors of Nursing/CNO.
  • Supervises and directs the central nursing staff office to ensure balanced and appropriate staffing across the nursing organization.
  • Plays a key role in bed coordination and allocation during surge alerts.
  • Alerts Nurse Manager of unmet staffing needs.
  • Provides direct patient care as clinically competent and indirect patient care support in appropriate emergent situations.

Human Resources & Organizational Management

  • Evaluates the performance of unit personnel and communicates with Nurse Managers/Educators.
  • Identifies learning needs of staff and participates in developing shift-specific education and evaluation.
  • Identifies potential disciplinary concerns (performance, behavior, attendance, punctuality) and disciplines as appropriate, following up with the Nurse Manager.
  • Participates in managing concerns of staff diversion and potential incapacity in the absence of departmental leadership.
  • Holds staff accountable for quality, safe patient care through compliance with approved policies and procedures.
  • Participates in staff and peer evaluations, providing feedback and opportunities for improvement.

Bed Flow Coordination

  • Plays a key role in bed coordination and allocation during surge alerts.
  • Directs nursing office-based bed coordinators.
  • Communicates census and bed flow plans daily at huddle.
  • Coordinates and communicates patient admissions to unit-based nurse facilitators, removing barriers to expedite flow and meet admission timeframe targets.
  • Collaborates and assigns beds for transfers from other hospitals to LGH.
  • Determines and communicates the need to hold patients in non-bedded units (e.g., PACU, post-procedure areas) based on census and discharges.

Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Current licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse, issued by the PA State Board of Nursing.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
  • Seven (7) years of experience as a registered nurse in an acute care setting.
  • Three (3) or more years of experience in a managerial hospital operations role (e.g., Assistant Nurse Manager, Nurse Manager, Nursing Supervisor, Charge Nurse/Facilitator).
  • A healthcare provider in good standing with Medicare, Medicaid, and other federal and state health insurance programs (i.e., not excluded from participation).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Master’s in Healthcare.
  • Previous Nursing Supervisor experience.
  • Experience in a large teaching hospital or specialty hospital (e.g., Women’s and Baby).
  • Broad nursing hospital experience across multiple units/departments.

Schedule

Full Time (36 hours per week). Nights (6pm-6am). Rotating weekends and holidays.
