Nursing Professional Development Practitioner (RN) - Inpatient Surgical
Location: 71 Haynes Street (10627). Work where every moment matters. About the Role
The Nursing Professional Development (NPD) practitioner is a Registered Nurse with NPD practice judgement and expertise who influences professional role competence and growth of learners. This position works in collaboration with nursing leadership to foster and influence competency management, clinical nursing education, professional role development, policy standardization, collaborative partnerships, scientific inquiry, transition to practice, and onboarding/orientation of new Hartford HealthCare colleagues. The practitioner promotes alignment of regional NPD and practice excellence with the HHC system as a whole.
Responsibilities
- Learning Facilitator: Uses the educational design process and adult learning principles to bridge knowledge, skills, and/or practice gaps identified through learning needs assessment and evaluation of outcomes.
- Collaborative Partner: Collaborates with nursing leadership to assess learning needs, develop programs, monitor clinical competency, and support action plans. Represents nursing in inter-professional learning activities.
- Role Development: Promotes professional nursing practice and quality patient care according to ANA standards of practice. Endorses a theory-based approach through the continuum of practice from novice to expert.
- Mentor: Advances the nursing profession and NPD specialty by contributing to the professional development of others and supporting ongoing professional learning.
- Competency Management: Utilizes tools to capture knowledge, skill, ability, judgment, and performance during situational or dynamic phases of practice (e.g., initial and ongoing competencies).
- Orientation: Develops, facilitates, conducts, and evaluates programs during onboarding and when changes in roles, responsibilities, or practice occur.
- Change Agent: Transforms processes at micro, meso, and/or macro system levels using change management strategies and theories to drive desired outcomes.
- Champion of Scientific Inquiry: Promotes a spirit of inquiry, generation and dissemination of new knowledge, and use of evidence to advance NPD practice and improve care quality.
Requirements
- Education: BSN required.
- Experience:
- Minimum of 3 years of active clinical nursing experience.
- At least 1 year of experience in an acute care environment or area of specialty for ambulatory/ancillary environments.
- Experience as a preceptor.
- Licensure, Certification, Registration:
- Licensed Registered Nurse from the CT DPH (obtained prior to hire date).
- NPD or Clinical Specialty Certification within two years of hire/transfer.
- BLS certification required.
- Skills and Abilities:
- Demonstrated ability to develop, deliver, and evaluate educational programs.
- Working knowledge of high reliability and LEAN process improvement strategies.
- Leadership skills and commitment to education as a methodology for continuous quality improvement.
- Knowledge of adult learning principles/theories and unit-based orientation plans.
- Strong skills in educational needs assessments and excellent verbal/written communication.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
