About the Role

The Nursing Assistant performs various patient care activities and related nonprofessional services necessary in caring for the personal needs and comfort of patients. The Nursing Assistant assists with patient cleaning, feeding, and preparation for treatment, takes and records vital signs, changes bed linen, prepares treatment trays and other supplies, and assists nursing service personnel with a variety of other patient care duties. Relies on established guidelines to accomplish tasks and works under close supervision.

Responsibilities

• Orders supplies in a cost-effective manner and transports supplies as needed.
• Assists with stocking unit supplies and contributes to the overall cleanliness of the unit.
• Addresses patient/visitor issues appropriately and notifies charge nurse of any issues.
• Assists as requested during an emergency situation.
• Bathes surgical patients and makes beds for all patients.
• Passes and picks up trays, fills ice water pitchers in AM and PM.
• Assists patients to the bathroom and performs peri-care on surgical patients.
• Performs I&Os and empties foleys as ordered.
• Assists patients to bed from Surgery and L&D.
• Takes vital signs.
• Makes ice packs, delivers juices, and assists patients as requested.
• Cleans IV poles, pumps, refrigerator, and tidies kitchen and conference room.
• Stocks gloves in each room and sets up rooms for anticipated Obs and surgeries.
• Transports lab specimens and orders stock supplies.
• Keeps midnight census up to date.
• Observes and enforces department/hospital policy concerning no smoking, telephone usage, dress code, and other rules governing conduct while at work.
• Appropriately identifies self to others (patients, patients' family, staff, physicians, etc.).
• Accepts responsibility for actions and omissions and is responsive to identified need for change.
• Adjusts personal schedule to meet hospital staffing needs when requested (including weekends and holidays).
• Reports to department on time and provides proper notification for absence or tardiness.
• Supports and encourages a harmonious working relationship within the department and other disciplines.
• Demonstrates effective time management and seeks additional work as time permits.
• Seeks guidance about questionable or uncertain situations.
• Demonstrates a cost-conscious attitude toward staffing, supplies, and departmental function.
• Obtains and uses information to improve patient outcomes and individual/hospital performance.
• Maintains interdepartmental communication through available resources.
• Follows established hospital guidelines regarding appropriate access of information.
• Utilizes hospital and/or departmental manuals appropriately (e.g., Safety Manual, MSDS Manual, Policy & Procedure Manuals).
• Respects each patient’s rights and conducts business relationships ethically (confidentiality, privacy, security, preferences, etc.).
• Reflects the hospital’s values and sensitivity to ethical and compliance principles in daily activities.
• Follows appropriate channels of communication to express ideas, issues, concerns, suggestions, and questions.
• Attends required in-services (e.g., CPR, Mandatory Safety, Infection Control).
• Attends and participates in a minimum of 3/4 of departmental meetings.
• Meets hospital-wide and department-specific educational requirements.
• Supports or assists in the orientation process for the department when requested.
• Participates in hospital-wide and department-specific Performance Improvement projects.
• Identifies self or department improvement needs and seeks appropriate resources.
• Maintains a safe, functional, and effective environment for patients, staff, and others.
• Responds to the Emergency Preparedness Plan according to hospital policy (e.g., Code Blue, Code Red, Code White).
• Knowledgeable of the location and use of emergency response equipment (e.g., fire extinguishers, fire alarms, crash carts).
• Maintains a safe and orderly work area and cleans equipment as needed.
• Ensures equipment is in safe and proper working condition through correct use and reports malfunctions.
• Completes occurrence reports in a timely manner when indicated.
• Applies ergonomic principles to reduce the potential for job-related injuries.
• Implements policies and procedures to identify and reduce risks of acquiring and transmitting infections.
• Maintains a current Employee Health screening status as per hospital policy.

Qualifications

• BLS certification
