Under the direction and supervision of a licensed nurse, the Nursing Assistant performs specific responsibilities within the framework of the NAI listing granted by the NC Department of Health and Human Services and practices within the philosophy and goals of patient care services. Additionally, the Nursing Assistant may be utilized in the Observer Role, monitoring one or more assigned patients on a designated unit for a specified time period.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in Quality Improvement (QI) Activities:
    • Engages in problem-solving resolution activities and identifies opportunities for improvement.
    • Participates in data collection.
    • Employs safe practices, infection control, and fire and disaster regulations.
    • Contributes to cost savings activities.
  • Participates in Education:
    • Attends and utilizes staff development programs and educational resources to meet unit or individual objectives.
    • Fulfills annual mandatory educational requirements.
    • Assists in the orientation of new staff and students, as delegated by the supervising RN.
  • Follows hospital and unit-based policies and procedures:
    • Provides quality patient care.
    • Maintains familiarity with job description and legal implications of the role.
    • Maintains active NAI licensure/certification.
    • Builds interpersonal relations and communications by listening to ideas, opinions, and feelings of others.
    • Gives and receives constructive feedback.
    • Recognizes and intervenes when personal conflicts may interfere with patient care or team relationships.
    • Works effectively in a team environment, demonstrating respectful behaviors and attitudes.
    • Seeks help and utilizes the chain of command appropriately.
  • Makes unit, department, and hospital contributions:
    • Participates in unit goal setting.
    • Assists in the cost-effective use of equipment and supplies.
    • Under the supervision of a licensed nurse, assists in providing direct patient care and completes delegated skills and tasks as ascribed by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.
    • Monitors patients for signs of escalating behaviors and alerts the nurse if the patient exhibits risk of harm to self or others.
    • Maintains the level of observation according to the patient’s plan of care and as ordered within the medical record.
    • Communicates effectively with the patient’s care team, including receiving reports and providing meaningful handoffs.
    • Documents accurately on established workflows within the medical record.
    • Provides hazard surveillance and reduces risk within the patient’s physical environment.
    • Engages patients appropriately in distraction activities as needed.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED is preferred (or higher).
  • NAI listing with the NC Department of Health and Human Services is required.
  • Current American Heart Association HeartSaver or higher certification is required.
  • De-escalation training (Non-violent crisis intervention or other de-escalation program adopted by ECU Health). If not current at the time of hire, must complete within 90 days of employment and maintain without lapse during employment. Not required for Ambulatory clinical positions.
