About the role
Facilitate the provision of patient care by performing basic, age-appropriate nursing care to patients under the direct supervision of a registered nurse. Demonstrate knowledge, skills, and abilities to provide care for the age group(s) served.

- Patient Care Skills:
- Assist the RN/LPN with functions to promote, restore, and maintain optimum patient health.
- Participate in creating and maintaining a healthy work environment by accepting professional direction and leadership of the RN and communicating progress, problems, or completed work.
- Perform patient hygiene activities (e.g., bathing, foot care, shaving, hair care).
- Assist with patient mobility activities (e.g., ambulation, transfers to chair).
- Assist with transfer of patients from bed to stretcher/stretcher to bed.
- Assist in keeping patients clean, dry, and regularly turned to prevent skin breakdown.
- Perform non-sterile treatments.
- Assist in monitoring and reporting patient pain levels.
- Assist patients to achieve optimum comfort levels (e.g., repositioning).
- Ensure supplies are immediately available by retrieving and returning equipment per procedure.
- Assist RN/LPN with inpatient and outpatient monitoring activities:
- Obtain patient-related information and document per policy and procedure (e.g., vital signs, basic patient care, valuables).
- Observe and report patient elimination patterns; empty foley bags and record output.
- Complete intake and output (I&O) records.
- Obtain and record patient weights.
- Assist with preparation of patients for surgery and special procedures.
- Collect non-sterile specimens.
- Recognize and report abnormal or unusual situations on a timely basis (e.g., pain, respiratory distress, skin changes, pressure areas).
- Utilize computer entry as directed.
- Observe patients in restraints for comfort and safety per policy; ensure restraints are not restrictive to extremities and offer food, fluid, and toileting opportunities.
- Dietary:
- Assist patients with meals and snacks.
- Prepare patients for meal service.
- Assist with menu selection and meal service as needed.
- Collect soiled trays from patients in a timely manner and take trays to the soiled utility room.
- Deliver snacks to patients as requested.
- Record patient food intake.
- Communicate patient eating problems to appropriate personnel.
- Order non-food and food items.
- Transport patients safely, efficiently, and in a timely manner:
- Use proper transfer techniques when moving patients.
- Observe patient condition and notify appropriate personnel of changes in status.
- Safety:
- Maintain a safe environment for patients and co-workers.
- Recognize unsafe conditions, take action, or report conditions to supervisor immediately.
- Use Universal Precautions to protect patients and self from infection.
- Demonstrate awareness of and concern for patient safety.
- Closely observe patients at risk for fall or injury and follow all related practice guidelines.
- Report and turn in broken or damaged equipment immediately.
- Operate all mechanical and electrical equipment safely and conscientiously at all times.
- Use correct techniques to dispose of biomedical waste materials.
- Practice proper body mechanics in daily work activities.
- Quality Improvement:
- Participate in quality assessment/quality improvement (QI) activities, including safety and universal precautions.
- Complete QI data collection activities as requested.
- Participate in implementing corrective action plans for improvement.
- Utilize cost containment measures in daily practice.
- Environmental Services: Perform limited housekeeping activities in select areas as needed.
- Compliance: Comply with department, Medical Center policies and procedures, standards, and rules of conduct; adhere to absenteeism and tardiness policies.
Requirements
- Essential Functions:
- Mobility to move between rooms, departments, and to rapidly initiate and complete patient care evacuation procedures.
- Ability to move standard patient care equipment and supplies.
- Ability to lift, move, support, transfer, and assist patients using techniques such as standing pivot, sliding board, 2- and 3-person lifts, and sheet assists.
- Manual dexterity to perform patient treatments and manipulate tools, instruments, and commonly used equipment.
- Organizational skills, observation, problem-solving, and ability to collect patient data and respond to unusual or abnormal situations.
- Interpersonal and written communication skills to effectively communicate with patients, families, staff, and physicians.
- Ability to walk, stoop, reach, and carry out routine cleaning functions.
- Ability to push and pull carts weighing several hundred pounds.
- Ability to climb and work from ladders.
- Working Conditions:
- Clinical nursing unit setting.
- Prolonged standing, walking, and lifting.
- Exposure to patient illness, communicable diseases, blood hazards, and hazardous chemicals.
- Duties must be completed despite frequent interruptions.
- Orientation Requirements: Must attend new employee and department orientations.
Qualifications
- Certified BLS Provider specializing in Basic Life Support credentialed from the American Heart Association (AHA) obtained within 3 months (90 days) of hire date or job transfer date.
- Current Michigan certification as a Nurse Aide is required at hire or must be obtained prior to hire, or at least 6 months of acute care Nurse Aide or Patient Care Technician experience, or completion of the first year of clinical rotation in a school of nursing.
- Nursing Assistants are not required to maintain certification after hire while actively working in the role.
- Certification is not required for internal transferees; renewal is not required.
- High school diploma or equivalent from an accredited program.
Schedule
Full-time days: 7:00 AM – 7:30 PM, Monday through Friday and every other weekend.
