Nemours is seeking a full-time Nursing Assistant (60 hours every 2 weeks) for our 4 East Unit in Wilmington, DE. This role includes working every third weekend, holiday rotation, and flex holidays as needed.

About the role

This position assists the health care team with patient care activities under the direction and guidance of a Registered Nurse. 4 East is a 24-bed general, specialty, and subspecialty medical unit with a high population of patients requiring respiratory or gastrointestinal management. Each single patient room is equipped with oxygen, compressed air, suction, state-of-the-art cardio-respiratory bedside monitors, and computers for accessing electronic medical records and barcoding medication administration to ensure patient safety.

The unit’s goals are to provide high-quality, cost-effective, family-centered care through daily inter-professional rounds and partnerships with patients and families.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures adequate stock of necessary equipment and supplies in designated areas at established par levels.
  • Maintains a clean and safe patient care unit.
  • Assists patients with activities of daily life (bathing, feeding, playing, etc.) and provides other patient care as directed.
  • Accurately charges all supplies.
  • Contacts pharmacy, dietary, and other departments as designated by the Registered Nurse.
  • Collects patient specimens (blood, urine, stool, etc.) with attention to patient safety, comfort, and accuracy of information.
  • Uses Hospital Information Systems for documenting vital signs and patient care activities.
  • Accurately relays information from physicians, nurses, laboratory personnel, and others.
  • Transports patients and delivers reports, supplies, etc., to other units or locations as needed.
  • Covers the patient care unit front desk as needed, including answering telephones, greeting patients, managing medical records, and processing mail.
  • Provides 1:1 sitter coverage for medically complex and behavioral health patients, as assigned.
  • Participates in departmental and hospital programs for Quality Assessment and Improvement, identifying opportunities to improve services and implementing recommendations.
  • Attends unit, departmental, and hospital education programs and meetings regularly.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in the care of patients of all ages: neonates, infants, toddlers, school-aged children, adolescents, and adults.

Requirements

  • Minimum 1 year of patient care experience preferred.
  • Able to read and write accurately.
  • Able to understand laboratory orders, computer information, and some medical terminology.
  • Able to obtain specimens, including blood, from a primarily pediatric and often ill, handicapped, or restricted patient population.
  • Current American Heart Association BLS certification.
  • High School Diploma required.
  • Inpatient experience preferred.
