Nursery Assistant Department Manager

Wage: $18.00 an hour

Responsibilities

• Produces designs for "Plant Your Own" projects, if applicable
• Understands and applies landscape design techniques and proper use of plant materials
• Operates and maintains equipment such as tow motors and loaders safely
• Assigns and prioritizes worker duties, schedules breaks, work hours, and vacations in the absence of the Manager
• Assists in conducting training meetings
• Coordinates maintenance, repair, and employee training for all equipment
• Assists with regularly scheduled departmental inventories
• Trains workers in store policies, departmental procedures, and job duties
• Communicates with Buyers regarding merchandising, new product implementation, and pricing
• Follows through with Buyer directions promptly
• Functions as a working manager, performing tasks to ensure smooth department operation (see all departmental job descriptions)
• Manages current inventories and ordering systems to assist with supply and merchandise orders from approved vendors
• Maintains smooth department operation in the absence of staff or manager
• Communicates performance and training issues to the department manager

Requirements

• Previous managerial or retail experience in a nursery preferred
• Broad knowledge of plant materials and ability to diagnose plant problems
• Ability to regularly lift and/or move up to 60 pounds and frequently lift and/or move up to 80 pounds
• Regular exposure to outside weather conditions
