Nurse Unit Manager

About the role

The Unit Manager assists with the direct supervision of all resident care activities performed within the assigned unit/hall. They assist with coordinating nursing service activities with facility administration, community agencies, physicians, and representatives/families. They also assist with the responsibility for nursing service compliance in accordance with facility policies and procedures as well as Federal and State regulations governing the facility under the direction of the Director of Nursing and/or Administrator.

Responsibilities

• Assist with planning, developing, organizing, implementing, evaluating, directing and managing the nursing services department under the direction of the Director of Nursing services.
• Aid in developing and implementing methods for coordinating nursing services with other resident services.
• Aid in implementing plans of action to correct deficiencies.
• Aid in maintaining an effective quality assurance program.
• Aid in planning, developing, implementing and maintaining resident discharge procedures and plans.
• Participate in surveys and inspections by government agencies.
• Participate in the interviewing and screening of residents for admission to the facility.
• Aid in assuring that each resident's attending physician(s) and representative/family are promptly notified of any significant change in the resident's health status.
• Aid in recruiting, interviewing, hiring, counseling, evaluating and disciplining nursing services personnel of assigned unit/hall, as requested.
• Aid in developing work assignments for nursing services personnel in keeping with specific nursing care needs of the residents.
• Assure that nursing services personnel are not required to perform any duties or functions outside of their scope of practice.
• Aid in reviewing personnel complaints and grievances and ensure that all personnel are treated consistent with policies and applicable laws.
• Participate in planning, implementing, conducting, and scheduling orientation, training and in-service educational activities for nursing service personnel.
• Maintain professional competence, as well as current license(s), through participation in continuing education programs, seminars, and training programs.
• Monitor nursing services to ensure that residents' rights and needs are met.
• Aid in developing for each resident a preliminary and comprehensive assessment and written care plan that identifies the nursing and medical problems and/or needs of the resident and the goals to be accomplished for each problem and/or need identified.
• Aid in implementing procedures to ensure that trained and authorized personnel operate nursing services equipment in a safe manner.
• Attend and participate in various committees and meetings of the facility as assigned by the Director of Nursing and/or Administrator.
• Aid in developing, implementing, and maintaining safety standards, maintaining necessary transmission-based precautions for monitoring communicable and/or infectious diseases among residents and personnel, and procedures for reporting hazardous conditions or equipment.

Requirements

• Currently licensed by the State of Indiana as a registered or licensed practical nurse.
• Preferably, has one or more years of demonstrated ability in nursing administration and/or supervision in a health facility.
• Has good managerial skills and a strong sense of responsibility.
• Has a current health certificate/examination required by State agencies.

• Maintains good working relationships with professional medical persons and willingness to increase knowledge in nursing, through individual study participation in workshops and formal classes when available.
• Possesses skills in the assessment of nursing care needs of the residents.

Qualifications

• Professional Qualifications: Currently licensed by the State of Indiana as a registered or licensed practical nurse. Preferably, has one or more years of demonstrated ability in nursing administration and/or supervision in a health facility. Should possess good managerial skills and strong sense of responsibility. Must possess a current health certificate/examination required by State agencies.
