Nurse (Temp) - Laboratory Schools (KinderFrogs and Starpoint)

About the role

The School Nurse provides professional nursing services to students enrolled in the TCU Laboratory Schools (KinderFrogs School and Starpoint School). The nurse promotes the health, safety, and well-being of students by conducting health screenings, administering medications and prescribed treatments, responding to illnesses and injuries, maintaining required health records, and serving as a health resource for students, families, faculty, and staff. The School Nurse serves as the first medical responder on campus during emergencies until emergency medical personnel and/or parents or guardians arrive. The position also assists the Laboratory Schools in maintaining compliance with applicable federal, state, university, and licensing regulations related to student health. This is a part-time position with a typical work schedule of Monday through Friday, 9:00am-2pm.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts student health screenings in accordance with state, university, and licensing requirements and current health recommendations.
  • Administers prescription and over-the-counter medications according to physician orders, parental authorization, and applicable regulations.
  • Provides medically prescribed nursing services and treatments.
  • Assesses and responds to student illness and injury, administering appropriate first aid and emergency care.
  • Serves as the first medical responder during emergencies until emergency medical services and/or parents or guardians arrive.
  • Determines when students should be excluded from school due to illness and communicates with parents or guardians regarding student health concerns.
  • Maintains accurate and confidential health records, medication logs, treatment documentation, and screening records.
  • Maintains student medication inventory and ensures medications are stored, administered, and documented according to policy.
  • Monitors and maintains school health supplies, emergency medical equipment, and first aid materials.
  • Serves as a health resource for faculty, staff, students, and families by providing guidance on health-related issues.
  • Assists in monitoring compliance with applicable federal, state, local, university, and licensing regulations regarding student health services.
  • Collaborates with school administration to recommend and implement improvements to health-related policies and procedures.
  • Communicates effectively with parents, physicians, faculty, staff, and administrators regarding student health needs while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Assists with staff and student education on health, wellness, communicable disease prevention, safety, CPR awareness, medication procedures, and other health-related topics.
  • Participates in emergency preparedness planning and health-related safety initiatives.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited professional nursing program.
  • Current experience or demonstrated competency in pediatric nursing or school nursing.
  • Valid registered nurse license (LVN or RN) to practice professional nursing in Texas from the State Board of Nurse Examiners.
  • Current certifications in CPR, AED, and First Aid.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with pediatric nursing.
  • Prior experience in a school, pediatric, or community health setting.

Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of pediatric health assessment and nursing practices.
  • Knowledge of student health appraisal and identification of health concerns.
  • Knowledge of medication administration procedures and documentation.
  • Knowledge of CPR, AED, First Aid, Heimlich maneuver, infection prevention, safety, and hygiene practices.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, university, and licensing regulations governing school health services.
  • Knowledge of confidentiality requirements and protection of student health information.
  • Knowledge of customer service principles and professional communication.
  • Skill in assessing student health needs and implementing appropriate nursing care.
  • Skill in providing emergency first aid and medical response.
  • Skill in maintaining accurate medical records and documentation.
  • Skill in effective verbal and written communication.
  • Skill in building collaborative relationships with students, families, faculty, staff, healthcare providers, and administrators.
  • Skill in organization, prioritization, and multitasking in a fast-paced school environment.
  • Ability to assess health concerns and make appropriate nursing decisions.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of student health information.
  • Ability to advocate for student health and safety.
  • Ability to recommend and assist with the development and implementation of health-related policies and procedures.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with school personnel.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with diverse audiences.

Physical Requirements

  • Visual acuity to read information from computer screens, forms and other printed materials and information.
  • Able to speak (enunciate) clearly in conversation and general communication.
  • Hearing ability for verbal communication/conversation/responses via telephone, telephone systems, and face-to-face interactions with effective communication with students, families, staff, and emergency personnel.
  • Manual dexterity for typing, writing, prolonged standing and reaching, flexibility, body movement for bending, crouching, walking, kneeling and sitting.
  • Lifting and moving objects and equipment up to 10 pounds.

Work Environment

Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor settings and may require schedule adjustments based on school needs. Position may involve exposure to communicable diseases while providing health services to students. Requires regular interaction with children who may become ill or injured during the school day. Noise level is generally moderate in a school environment.
