About the Role

The Nurse Technician performs various patient care activities and related non-professional services necessary in caring for the personal needs, safety, and comfort of patients, and assists in maintaining a safe and clean environment under the supervision of the Registered Nurse.

This role involves a high degree of interaction with patients and family members.

Responsibilities

• Provide patient care, including accurate observations of patient needs and reporting symptoms to the Licensed Nurse.
• Maintain proper body alignment for patients at all times.
• Assist in providing general routine patient care based on the Registered Nurse’s assessment and plan of care, adhering to accepted policies and procedures.
• Perform basic patient care tasks such as hygiene, making occupied and unoccupied beds, oral care, peri care, hair care, assisting with elimination, and feeding patients when necessary.
• Assist with patient movement, including range of motion, turning patients every 2 hours, positioning them in bed, and assisting to the chair when applicable.
• Transport patients by gurney, bed, or wheelchair.
• Remove and apply restraints, replace telemetry batteries and patches as requested.
• Prevent skin breakdown and monitor vital signs, including pain level.
• Assist with maintaining accurate intake and output records.
• Participate in hourly rounding to assess patient needs and safety.
• Assist in creating a quiet environment for patients.
• Perform procedures related to elimination, including foley care, colostomy care, urostomy care, and appliance emptying or changing.
• Perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) as requested.
• Perform Electrocardiograms (EKGs).
• Assist with ambulation using assistive devices such as crutches, walkers, or gait belts.
• Care for tubes and drains, including Jackson Pratt, hemovac, and pleurovac.
• Use equipment such as intermittent compression devices, traction, scales, and cast care.
• Perform surgical skin preparation.
• Run errands to facilitate workflow, such as taking specimens to the lab.
• Operate technical equipment safely and appropriately.
• Demonstrate knowledge of special needs and behaviors of age-specific groups.
• Document accurately in the electronic medical record, restraint record, and belongings list.
• Demonstrate knowledge of legal aspects of care and legal documents pertinent to the unit/area.
• Demonstrate knowledge of the computer system in use.
• Assist in special projects or assignments as needed.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Current California License as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) is preferred.
• Minimum one year of experience in an acute care setting preferred.
• Possess and maintain current certification in American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers.
• Maintain annual competencies, including successful completion of the annual skills requirement.

• Skills obtained through completion of a basic nursing aide course or the basic nursing modules in the Registered Nursing or Licensed Vocational Nursing programs at a community college.
