Nurse Supervisor - RN Nights
About the Role
The Nurse Supervisor provides supervision of all patient care areas in the hospital. This role requires a working knowledge of hospital and nursing policies and procedures and the ability to apply independent judgement in their interpretation. The Nurse Supervisor serves as a managerial and clinical link between the Director of Nursing and/or Nurse Manager and department direction in their absence, promoting the mission, vision, and values of the organization.
The Nurse Supervisor assumes primary leadership accountability and responsibility for milieu management and directing patient care activities of other nursing staff. They maintain standards of professional nursing practice in accordance with facility policy and procedures, external governing and credentialing bodies, performance improvement standards, and psychiatric nursing standards.
Responsibilities
- Assess patient care requirements on each unit by making rounds throughout all areas of the hospital.
- Ensure departmental staffing plans are implemented appropriately.
- Serve as a resource to staff for solving clinical problems and assist in efficiently utilizing staffing and other resources.
- Provide immediate follow-up, documentation, and communication of incidents to the appropriate manager and director.
- Respond to emergency situations and assist as necessary.
- Act as a resource in identifying and solving administrative/operational problems.
- Contact representatives of departments not presently in the hospital for assistance with problem-solving.
- Interpret and ensure adherence to hospital and nursing philosophy, policies, and procedures.
- Report significant incidents and problems (e.g., unusual patient/family concerns, physician issues, utility outages, security problems, regulatory calls, safety issues) to the administrator-on-call or DON/Nurse Manager.
- Provide ongoing feedback, both verbal and written, to staff on performance in collaboration with DON/Nurse Manager.
- Assist with providing information necessary for conducting nursing personnel performance evaluations.
- Identify and communicate staff needs for continuing education to the DON/Nurse Manager.
- Provide education, remediation, and assessment of skills competencies as directed by the DON/Nurse Manager.
- Monitor documentation for adherence to rules and regulations.
- Ensure environment of care requirements are met (e.g., quality logs, infection control practices).
- Utilize the nursing process: assessing, planning, and formulating nursing interventions for an individualized plan of care.
- Identify expected outcomes, including discharge planning, and evaluate the effectiveness of interventions.
- Conduct ongoing assessment of clients from admission to discharge.
- Initiate medical/psychiatric crisis intervention to stabilize patient conditions.
- Provide individual patient teaching and facilitate family/significant other education.
- Demonstrate knowledge of psychiatric disorders and implement appropriate nursing interventions.
- Administer medications safely, provide education on prescribed medications, and recognize adverse drug reactions.
- Review, revise, and update medical records within facility guidelines and timeframes.
- Transcribe and implement physician’s orders according to facility policy.
- Document care, progress, and response to intervention accurately and concisely.
- Follow up on client care responsibilities and communicate current client needs to staff for continuity of care.
- Perform other duties and projects as assigned.
Requirements
- Minimum Associate Degree in Nursing.
- Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the resident working state.
- Minimum of 3 years of Registered Nursing experience.
- Psychiatric nursing experience required.

- Must successfully complete CPR certification and an approved behavioral health de-escalation program.

Work Environment
Subject to many interruptions and pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries. The role can be high-paced and stressful, requiring the ability to cope mentally and physically with the atmosphere. May experience disagreeable odors, sights, and unpredictable patient behavior. Requires spending approximately 90% or more of the time inside a building that offers protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes.
