Nurse Supervisor
Primary Purpose
The Nurse Supervisor (RN) provides services that meet the health needs of students and staff on a school campus or campuses; and supervises and trains other staff to do so. The school nurse is responsible for implementing coordinated school health services that are best suited to the population of the campus or campuses. Facilitates positive student responses to normal development; promotes health and safety; intervenes with actual and potential health problems; provides case management to students; and actively collaborates with others to build student and family capacity for adaptation, self-management, self-advocacy, and learning. The nurse supervisor ensures staff provide care to scholars within their scope of practice.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Assists in hiring appropriate campus-level health office staff
- Participates in setting goals and priorities for the health service program in conjunction with nursing and other staff, within the framework established by the district
- Comply with all regulations and guidelines set by the Texas BON
- Comply with local health authorities and DSHS illness criteria
- Participates in staff development, orientation, training, and certification
- Educates faculty and staff as needed on health-related topics
- Ensure health service staff practice within their scope of practice
- Serve as a member of the emergency and crisis response team for the district and/or campus, as requested
- Establishes effective procedures for State mandatory screening
- Administer vaccines according to the TVFC Program guidelines
- Provide supervision to health office aides, LVNs, and other school personnel designated
- Delegate in accordance with the guidelines in the Texas BON
- Attend ARDs and 504 meetings; develop and implement IHPs as necessary according to the health needs and conditions of students
- Exercises professional judgment in making decisions
- Collaborate with all departments across the network to ensure a safe environment for all students and staff
- Provide routine, urgent, and emergent care to scholars and staff in compliance with nursing standards and Uplift guidelines
- Provide care to scholars/staff in pandemic using appropriate infection control measures
Education Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in nursing or a related discipline required
- 1-2 years of experience as a supervisor in the area of healthcare required
- Qualified to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Texas and holds an unrestricted license
- Certified in CPR (BLS)
- Minimum of one year of experience in public health nursing, community health nursing, school health nursing, or pediatric nursing. Demonstrates a genuine interest in the student population and its health needs.
Reasoning Ability
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form
Required Skills/Abilities
- Communication Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and apply common sense understanding, and to carry out instructions in written or oral form in English. Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, administrators, and other school personnel
- Bilingual Skills: Bi-lingual (English and Spanish) preferred
- Technology: To perform this job successfully, an individual should be proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook) and other computer software. Ability to use basic office equipment. The ability to learn and use other software as necessary
- Other Skills: Knowledge of project management processes preferred
Physical Demands
- While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, climb stairs, use wrists, hands and/or fingers
- The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds
- Work at a desk and computer screen for extended periods of time
Work Environment
- The environment requires close proximity to other employees, frequent interruptions, extended periods of time viewing a computer screen, and noise levels from moderate to high
- Exposure to bacteria and/or communicable diseases is possible
- Travel within the Uplift network is required. May require some outside work in the heat or cold. Some weekends will be required
