Nurse Specialist #1628 - Family Health Center Pediatrics - Health & Social Services Division

All Hamilton County Health & Social Services Division employees are responsible for ensuring their contact information is current and they are accessible should a public health emergency arise. The division maintains a call-down system to store contact information and mobilize staff in the event of an emergency. During a public health emergency, all staff are required to respond if mobilized, and work hours may be modified to meet community needs.

About the role

Under general supervision, provides professional nursing care within the specialty of public health nursing. This includes maintenance, disease prevention, psychosocial and physical assessment; investigation, treatment, education, and prevention of infectious diseases; family planning; fetal-infant mortality review/prevention; prenatal care; quality assessment and improvement; pediatrics; immunizations; sexual and reproductive wellness; and other public health programs and services.

Responsibilities

• Specimen collection; case investigation, contact monitoring, and/or tracing as assigned.
• Test result notification, consultation, education, and referral work with individuals and community partners regarding health directives and guidelines.
• Provide specialized education activities to support clinical services staff, including in-service training and staff development.
• Maintain effective working relationships with the public, co-workers, and other agency departments.
• Act as a clinical resource, sharing knowledge and information as appropriate.
• Conduct and coordinate clinical/mobile outreach.

Requirements

• Knowledge of federal, state, and county laws, rules, regulations, policies, practices, and procedures related to Public Health Professional Nursing and Clinical Services.
• Knowledge of professional Registered Nurse medical methods, practices, and procedures.
• Advanced proficiency with computers, peripheral equipment, and software.
• Knowledge of all clinics and programs within the Clinical Services area.
• Knowledge of community and county medical, social, and emotional services and resources.
• Knowledge of quality reviews, audit methods, practices, and procedures.
• Knowledge of specialty methods, practices, and procedures related to areas of assignment.
• Knowledge of patient chart documentation, record keeping, case management, and specialized medical procedures.
• Knowledge and skill in assessing staff competency.
• Knowledge of program development, including objectives, outlines, and references.
• Knowledge and skill in adult teaching methods/principles and documentation standards for educational activities.
• Skill in using specialized medical equipment with proper universal health and safety precautions.
• Skill in managing upset or confrontational patients, clients, or family members.
• Skill in reading, analyzing, and interpreting medical research, reports, tests, and information.
• Knowledge of providing case management to indigent or underserved populations.
• Skill in customer service and public relations techniques when responding to inquiries and complaints.
• Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
• Advanced verbal and written communication skills for presentations, counseling, developing educational materials, and medical instructions.
• Skill in working with audio-visuals and program presentation ancillary tasks.

Qualifications

• A Bachelor’s Degree or an Associate’s Degree in Nursing.
• Active Registered Nurse (RN) licensure or eligibility for licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse.
• Current CPR Certification and a valid driver’s license.

Additional Requirements

• This position is deemed essential/situational during inclement weather and must report to or remain at work, even when administrative closings are announced, as determined by the Department Head.
• Prior to operating a County-owned vehicle, completion of the HC Defensive Driving course and/or an Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC) is required.

Physical Requirements

• Long periods of standing and walking.
• Lifting supplies weighing up to ten (10) pounds.
• Assisting patients in transfers to examination tables.
• Performing routine lab work such as blood draws and specimen collection.
• Extended periods of contact with infectious diseases.
• Ability to drive an automobile.
