Responsibilities
- Manages comprehensive and individualized care for patients and families in the Inpatient/Critical care phase of hospitalization
- Collaborates with Critical Care or follows established protocol to order additional tests or consults to complete the preoperative and/or pre-procedure workup
- Performs, interprets, and communicates results of common diagnostic tests
- Consults and communicates with Critical Care and surgical services regarding abnormal findings in the evaluations of patients
- Develops a comprehensive individualized plan of care for patients that include teaching, discharge planning, and necessary referrals to other members of the health care team
- Participates in physician/team rounds
- Identifies unstable or complex patient care situations and facilitates appropriate intervention with appropriate resources
- Recognizes emergency situations and initiates effective emergency care
- Demonstrates critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning skills in clinical decision making by the identification, evaluation, and management of the individual needs of patients/families
- Demonstrates the ability to utilize basic equipment in a safe manner
- Facilitates patient discharge/transfer by coordination of appropriate services
- Bases decisions made/actions taken on relevant scientific principles, established standards of care, and/or research findings
- Promotes an environment that facilitates learning by responding to appropriate patient/family preferences, priorities, and readiness to learn
- Updates own knowledge base throughout the year
- Completes all identified clinical competencies
- Mentors nursing personnel in all levels of clinical practice
- Communicates effectively with patients/families, physicians, and ancillary services at all levels to assure coordinated, efficient patient care
- Documents the plan of care, interventions, and evaluations in a clear and concise manner
- Adheres to the established Performance Expectations for WVU-UHA Employees in the areas of People, Service, Performance Improvement, and Shared Values & Culture
- Performs initial assessment and develops plan for new admissions in conjunction with the critical care attending physician
- Ensures patient summary (i.e. Problem List) and orders are current
- Ensures appropriate transition to next team when patient is ready to leave the ICU
- Performs appropriate procedures as directed by Critical Care Team and within scope of practice
Qualifications
- Graduate from a CCNE accredited nursing program with Master’s Degree in Nursing
- National Certification by one of the recognized APRN Certification Centers
- Licensure or eligibility for licensure, as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia
- American Heart Association BLS Certification required with additional Advanced Life Support training at the discretion of the department
- Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS)
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
- FNP, ACGNP certification or ACNP required, but would consider FNP willing to complete either certification within first full credentialing cycle
Experience
- Acute care, critical care experience preferred

- Proficiency with computers
- Strong communication skills
