Nurse Practitioner / Physician Assistant Neurology Headache Outpatient
About the role
This position is for a Physician Assistant (PA) or Nurse Practitioner (NP) specializing in Headache Pain. The role involves assisting, monitoring, and managing the day-to-day needs of patients under the supervision of a physician, in accordance with customary and generally accepted medical standards. At least one year of neurology experience as an Advanced Practice Provider (APP) is required.
Responsibilities
- Provide medical services under the supervision of a licensed physician, consistent with the PA's or NP's education, training, and experience.
- Perform and document accurate, complete, and relevant history and physical assessments appropriate for the patient's age, gender, and clinical problem.
- Order, perform, and interpret laboratory tests and diagnostic studies/procedures in collaboration with physicians and consultants as appropriate.
- Manage general medical and surgical conditions based on comprehensive knowledge of etiologies, risk factors, pathophysiology, and the indications and contraindications of pharmacologic agents and other treatment modalities.
- Prescribe medication safely and effectively in accordance with best practices, hospital policy, and New Jersey regulations, providing patient education as needed.
- Promote Hackensack Meridian Health (HMH) PA/NP practice recognition through conferences, publications, and presentations.
- Provide patient- and family-centered, compassionate, and effective care for the promotion of health and treatment of disease.
- Practice as a healthcare provider according to the rules and regulations of the Medical Staff and bylaws as outlined in the delineation of privileges.
- Apply evidence-based and value-based medicine to systematically analyze and improve patient care practices and outcomes.
- Evaluate patient/family transition of care planning, considering resource utilization, cost, quality, safety, and self-management promotion for chronic conditions.
- Demonstrate clinical expertise through advanced assessment and procedural skills pertinent to the practice specialty.
- Translate "best practice" into clinical practice by evaluating current protocols and standards of care.
- Provide culturally sensitive and educationally appropriate health management education to patients and families.
- Facilitate consistent, coordinated care and clear communication among all members of the healthcare team through participation in daily interdisciplinary rounds.
- Serve as an advocate for patients and families, identifying and addressing obstacles to care progression and escalating issues as appropriate.
- Act as a clinical resource for the multidisciplinary team by addressing clinical, process, and system improvement opportunities.
- Participate in organizational and departmental meetings, committees, and workgroups as necessary.
- Demonstrate accountability for professional practice and adhere to ethical principles regarding patient confidentiality, informed consent, and adverse outcomes.
- Promote a collaborative work environment supporting the organizational mission, behavior expectations, values, and pillars.
- Mentor other PAs/NPs, precept students in PA/NP programs, and participate in educational programs as a clinical expert.
- Identify patient/family educational needs and collaborate to implement appropriate teaching materials.
- Promote innovation by integrating new clinical knowledge into practice.
- Participate in clinical research activities and disseminate findings through practice, education, presentations, and publications.
- Identify ethical care issues and coordinate interdisciplinary meetings to resolve them.
- Comply with HMH and department-specific scope of services, policies, and procedures as applicable to the role.
- Adhere to all HMH infection control and safety policies.
- Complete medication reconciliations as appropriate.
- Participate in annual PA/NP peer review.
- Collaborate with medical staff to support nursing-led protocols.
- Facilitate and participate in nursing educational programs as a clinical expert.
- Adhere to the legal framework and scope of practice defined by the NJ Division of Consumer Affairs, ensuring compliance with all applicable statutes and professional standards.
- Perform other duties and/or projects as assigned.
- Adhere to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.
Qualifications
For Physician Assistants:
- Successful completion of an approved physician assistant program, accredited by the AMA Council on Medical Education.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.
Licenses and Certifications Required for Physician Assistants:
- Physician Assistant License.
- National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) certification.
- AHA Basic Health Care Life Support (BLS) HCP Certification.
- AHA Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification.
For Nurse Practitioners:
- Graduate of an NLN/AACN accredited nursing program.
- Master's or Doctorate degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
- Maintain clinical competencies through continuing education and clinical practice.
- Experience in a relevant patient care setting (or as regulations dictate).
- National Provider Identifier (NPI).
- Prescriptive authority through CDS and DEA registration according to New Jersey state law.
- Collaborative agreement with physicians on staff.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.
Licenses and Certifications Required for Nurse Practitioners:
- New Jersey State Professional Registered Nurse License.
- Advanced Practice Nurse License.
- AHA Basic Health Care Life Support (BLS) HCP Certification.
- Board certification by AANP or ANCC.
- AHA Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification.
Pay
Minimum rate of $146,348.80 annually. HMH is committed to pay equity and transparency. The posted rate of pay is a reasonable good faith estimate of the minimum base pay for this role at the time of posting. The starting rate of pay may vary based on labor market data, experience, education, certifications, skills, geographic location, internal equity, budget, and grant funding. Full-time and part-time (20+ hours/week) positions are eligible for a comprehensive benefits package, including health, dental, vision, paid leave, tuition reimbursement, and retirement benefits.
