Nurse Practitioner / Physician Assistant - Medical NICU

About the role

The Newborn/Infant Intensive Care Unit (N/IICU) at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia is a 100-bed Level IV unit with significant growth planned in the coming years. Our Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants provide care for neonates who need acute medical care, including multidisciplinary evaluations, complex surgical intervention, ECMO and special low-dose radiologic imaging. The medical staff is organized into teams, led by a senior neonatologist. Fellows, neonatal nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and pediatric residents work with the neonatologists on each team to provide care for 12-18 babies.

Responsibilities

• Affirms the urgency and emergent conditions of the complex acute, critical and chronically ill patient.
• Evaluates relevant data to assess physiologic instability.
• Performs therapeutic interventions to stabilize acute and critical health problems, as outlined in the Scope of Practice Document and approved as part of the credentialing/privileging process.
• Analyzes the indications, contraindications, risks of complications, and cost-benefits of therapeutic interventions.
• Manages the plan of care through evaluation, modification, and documentation based on the patient's response to therapy.
• Fosters the transition of the patient between and within health care settings.
• Serves as an educational resource to the patient/family, nursing staff, and provider team.
• Consults with multidisciplinary health care team members.
• Participates in scholarly activities including research and education.
• Maintains required competencies, identifies learning needs, and seeks appropriate educational offerings.
• Supports the development of nurses, nurse practitioners, students, and other health care providers as a preceptor and mentor.
• Demonstrates a commitment to patient safety by speaking up about safety issues and changing practice to enhance safety.
• Shares errors or potential errors through system reporting mechanisms.
• Demonstrates shared accountability for safe practice.

Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree in Nursing or Physician Assistant.
• Master's Degree in Nursing or Physician Assistant preferred.
• Prescriptive Authority - Pennsylvania State Licensing Board – Required within 3 months of hire.
• Specialty Certification - in area of education/subspecialty. Required certification must match scope of practice for that practice area. Required upon hire.
• Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner (CRNP) - Pennsylvania State Licensing Board – Required upon hire.
• Certified Physician Assistant (PA-C) - Pennsylvania State Licensing Board – Required upon hire.
• Certified Physician Assistant (PA-C) - National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants – Required upon hire.

Qualifications

• Ability to work in an inter-professional team setting with multiple responsibilities.
• Required proficiency in using computer and electronic medical records.
• Required proficiency in using Microsoft Office (Word processing, spreadsheets, presentations and Teams).
• Required proficiency in web browsing, intranet search, document access, and use of shared network file space.
• Required proficiency in basic use of patient facing technology (e.g. IV pumps, point of care devices, CR monitors).
• Required proficiency in navigation and use of clinical communication systems.
• Required proficiency in information literacy (determines the nature and extent of clinical information needed and accesses it effectively).
• Required proficiency in information management literacy (navigation of the electronic health record system, ability to locate and review specific patient data in various clinical information systems, effective use of clinical decision support tools).
• Required proficiency in understanding policies and procedures, confidentiality, security, and privacy regulations regarding the use of clinical information systems.
• Required proficiency in ability to collect clinical data using quality improvement tools.

Pay

SALARY RANGE: $117,900.00 - $156,300.00 Annually
