Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant - Pediatrics Hospitalist

About the Role

The Department of Pediatrics, Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine is recruiting for an Advanced Practice Provider (NP/PA) to work full time on the inpatient acute care medical-surgical units at Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital in Charleston, South Carolina. The pediatric inpatient units include over 50 patient beds staffed by board-certified pediatric hospital medicine physicians, skilled nurses, respiratory therapists, clinical pharmacists, dietitians, child life specialists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, case managers, and social workers.

This is a salaried, exempt position with full-time hours (40 scheduled weekly hours). The role involves 3-4 shifts per week with rotating coverage across days, evenings, and weekends.

Patient Population

• Pediatric hospital medicine population includes a full spectrum of pediatric medical inpatients, surgical co-management, and pediatric rehabilitation patients.
• Patient age range: 0 to 21 years.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct patient care delivery on medical/surgical and rehabilitation units.
• Take comprehensive histories and perform physical examinations.
• Evaluate and treat patients based on history, physical examination, radiological, laboratory, and other diagnostic test results pursuant to the practice agreement or scope of practice guideline.
• Streamline timely inpatient discharges.
• Assist in coordination of care between physicians, nurses, and sub-specialty teams.
• Initiate referrals to other healthcare providers and/or consult with the attending or collaborating physician.
• Document and bill for direct care provided in the Epic electronic medical record.
• Utilize current research and evidence-based decision-making in all clinical practice.
• Perform and participate in quality/performance improvement activities and clinical research.
• Participate in and support accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities of the organization.
• Interact with a diverse group of learners, including medical students, residents, and fellows.
• Maintain professional practice through active participation, licenses, certifications, continuing education, etc.
• Potential to precept students at MUSC enrolled as an advanced practice provider student and facilitate the learning of new team members.

Requirements

• Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as a Physician Assistant or completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as an APRN.
• Required licensure/certification types:
  • Primary Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PCPNP) or Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP): Pediatric patients (birth to age 21), stable chronic disease state management, or primary care setting.
  • Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP): Stable chronic disease state management or primary care across the lifespan (birth to death).
• Preferred licensure/certification: Pediatric Acute Care NP (PACNP) for pediatric patients (birth to age 21) who are acutely ill, injured, potentially unstable, or technologically dependent.
• Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers certification.
• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.
• DHEC and DEA license applications must be started prior to the first day.

Preferred Qualifications

• One year of pediatric subspecialty experience with inpatient pediatric care and physical medicine & rehab medicine or pediatric neurology.
• Excellent clinical skills with experience in efficient, direct patient care.
• Strong active listening, critical thinking, and professional demeanor with patients and families.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills.
• Strong commitment to quality improvement and evidence-based medicine.

Supervision

Advanced Practice Registered Nurses or Physician Assistants will be assigned a Primary Supervising/Collaborating Physician employed by MUSC and will report directly to this physician.

Physical Requirements

• Continuous standing, walking, and sitting; ability to bend at the waist, kneel, climb stairs, and reach in all directions.
• Full use of both hands and legs, good finger dexterity, and ability to perform repetitive motions.
• Ability to be qualified physically for respirator use, initially and as required.
• Maintain 20/40 vision corrected; see and recognize objects at close and far distances.
• Work in a latex-safe environment and indoors.
• Frequently lift, lower, push, pull, and/or carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs unassisted; exert up to 50 lbs of force; lift from 36" to overhead up to 25 lbs.
• Infrequently work in dusty areas and confined/cramped spaces.
