Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant - Pediatrics Hospitalist

University Medical Associates (UMA) is seeking a full-time Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) to join the Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine at Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital in Charleston, South Carolina.

About the Role

The inpatient acute-care medical-surgical units comprise over 50 patient beds and are staffed by board-certified pediatric hospitalists, nurses, respiratory therapists, clinical pharmacists, dietitians, child-life specialists, physical, occupational, and speech therapists, case managers, and social workers.

This is a salaried, exempt position with full-time hours (40 scheduled weekly). Shift work is rotating across days, evenings, and weekends (3–4 shifts per week).

Patient Population

• Pediatric medical inpatients, surgical co-management, and pediatric rehabilitation patients
• Ages 0 to 21 years

Responsibilities

• Deliver direct patient care on medical/surgical and rehabilitation units
• Obtain comprehensive histories and perform physical examinations
• Evaluate and treat patients based on history, physical exam, radiological, laboratory, and other diagnostic test results within the practice agreement or scope-of-practice guidelines
• Streamline timely inpatient discharges
• Coordinate care among physicians, nurses, and sub-specialty teams
• Initiate referrals to other health-care providers and consult with the attending or collaborating physician
• Document and bill for direct care in the Epic electronic medical record
• Utilize current research and evidence-based decision-making in clinical practice
• Participate in quality/performance improvement activities and clinical research
• Support accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities of the organization
• Interact with a diverse group of learners, including medical students, residents, and fellows
• Maintain professional licensure, certifications, CNEs/CMEs, and other requirements
• Precept advanced-practice provider students at MUSC and facilitate onboarding of new team members

Requirements

• Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as a Physician Assistant, or completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as an APRN in one of the following categories:
  • Primary Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PCPNP) or Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP): pediatric patients (birth to age 21), stable chronic-disease management, or primary-care setting
  • Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP): stable chronic-disease management or primary care across the lifespan
• Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers certification
• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification
• DHEC and DEA license applications must be started prior to the first day

Preferred Qualifications

• Pediatric Acute Care NP (PACNP) certification: pediatric patients (birth to age 21) who are acutely ill, injured, potentially unstable, or technologically dependent
• One year of pediatric subspecialty experience in inpatient pediatric care, physical medicine & rehabilitation, or pediatric neurology

Physical Requirements

• Continuous standing, walking, and sitting; frequent bending, kneeling, climbing stairs, reaching in all directions, and full use of both hands and legs with good finger dexterity
• Frequent lifting, lowering, pushing, pulling, and/or carrying objects weighing up to 50 lbs unassisted; exerting up to 50 lbs of force; lifting from 36" to overhead up to 25 lbs
• Ability to be physically qualified for respirator use
• Maintain 20/40 corrected vision; see and recognize objects at close and far distances
• Work indoors in a latex-safe environment; infrequent exposure to dusty areas and confined/cramped spaces
