Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant - Pediatric ICU

The Department of Pediatrics, Division of Critical Care is recruiting for a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to work full time in the 28-bed Pediatric ICU (PICU) at Shawn Jenkin’s Children Hospital. This interdisciplinary unit is staffed by board-certified intensivists, highly skilled nurses, respiratory therapists, clinical pharmacists, dietitians, child life specialists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, case managers, and social workers.

About the role

This is a full-time, salaried (exempt) position requiring 40 scheduled weekly hours, including 13-hour shifts with rotating days, nights, weekends, and holiday coverage. The patient population includes pediatric patients aged 0 to 21 years in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Requirements

• Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as a Physician Assistant, or completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as an APRN.
• Pediatric Acute Care NP (PACNP) certification for APRNs, specializing in pediatric patients (birth to age 21) who are acutely ill, injured, potentially unstable, or technologically dependent.
• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.
• DHEC and DEA license applications must be started prior to the first day.
• Preferred: One year of Pediatric ICU experience as a nurse or Advanced Practice Provider (PA/NP).

Responsibilities

• Provides direct patient care, including taking comprehensive histories and performing physical examinations.
• Evaluates and treats patients based on history, physical examination, radiological, laboratory, and other diagnostic test results under the practice agreement or scope of practice guideline.
• Performs therapeutic procedures as approved by the Clinical Division Chief, within the bounds of procedural privileges, skill, and proficiency.
• Initiates referrals to other healthcare providers and consults with the attending or collaborating physician.
• Documents and bills for direct care provided.
• Utilizes current research and evidence-based decision-making in clinical practice.
• Participates in quality/performance improvement activities and clinical research.
• Supports accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities of the organization.
• Demonstrates responsibility for professional practice through active participation in professional organizations and continuing education.
• Potential to precept students enrolled as advanced practice provider students and facilitates the learning of new team members.
• Maintains all required licenses, certifications, CNEs/CMEs, and other credentials as mandated by applicable policies and state law.

Physical Requirements

• Continuous standing, walking, and sitting; ability to bend at the waist, kneel, climb stairs, and reach in all directions.
• Full use of both hands and legs, good finger dexterity, and ability to perform repetitive motions with hands, wrists, elbows, and shoulders.
• Ability to be physically qualified for respirator use, initially and as required.
• Maintain 20/40 corrected vision, see and recognize objects at close and far distances, and work indoors in a latex-safe environment.
• Frequently lift, lower, push, pull, and/or carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs unassisted; exert up to 50 lbs of force; lift from 36" to overhead up to 25 lbs.
• Infrequent work in dusty areas and confined/cramped spaces.
