About the Role
The ICU Advanced Practice Provider (APP) is a valued member of the intensive care team, responsible for comprehensive management of critical care medicine patients. The APP coordinates care in an interprofessional environment, collaborates with medical/surgical specialty teams, and ensures adherence to protocols and regulatory guidelines. This role contributes to excellence in patient care, research, teaching, and leadership.
Responsibilities
- Provides direct patient care, including taking comprehensive histories and performing physical examinations.
- Evaluates and treats patients based on history, physical exams, and diagnostic test results.
- Performs therapeutic procedures, such as:
- Arterial line placement
- Central line placement
- Pulmonary artery catheter placement
- Chest tube removal
- Temporary epicardial pacing wires removal
- Epidural catheter removal
- External pacemaker application
- Direct current cardioversion
- Lumbar puncture
- Bronchoscopy
- Intubation
- Paracentesis
- Thoracentesis
- Interosseous access
- Initiates referrals to other healthcare providers and consults with attending or collaborating physicians.
- Documents and bills for direct care provided.
- Utilizes current research and evidence-based decision-making in clinical practice.
- Participates in quality/performance improvement activities and clinical research.
- Supports accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities.
- Engages in professional development, including continuing education and participation in professional organizations.
- Precepts students enrolled in advanced practice provider programs and facilitates learning for new team members.
- Maintains required licenses, certifications, and continuing education credits.
Requirements
- Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant (PA) program and current or eligible licensure as a PA, or completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner (NP) program and current or eligible licensure as an APRN, with one of the following certifications:
- AGPNP/ANP (Adult Gerontology Primary Care NP or Adult NP): For adult patients (13 years to death) in stable chronic disease or primary care settings.
- FNP (Family NP): For patients across the lifespan (birth to death) in stable chronic disease or primary care settings.
- Preferred APRN certification: AGACNP/ACNP (Adult Gerontology Acute Care NP/Acute Care Nurse Practitioner) for adult patients (13 years to death) who are acutely ill, unstable, or technologically dependent.
- Preferred experience: 2+ years as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant, with acute care training and/or cardiology experience.
- Assigned a Primary Supervising/Collaborating Physician and reports directly to this physician.
- Required certifications:
- Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
- DHEC and DEA license applications must be started prior to the first day.

Schedule
- Full-time, salaried/exempt position.
- 13-hour shifts (13 shifts per month), with >90% of shifts being nights.
Physical Requirements
- Continuous standing, walking, and sitting; frequent bending, kneeling, and reaching.
- Ability to lift, lower, push, pull, or carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs unassisted.
- Exert up to 50 lbs of force; lift from 36" to overhead up to 25 lbs.
- Good finger dexterity and ability to perform repetitive motions.
- Qualified physically for respirator use.
- Maintain 20/40 corrected vision.
- Work indoors in a latex-safe environment; infrequent exposure to dusty or confined spaces.
