Nurse Practitioner (Oncology)

About the role

We are seeking a Nurse Practitioner to provide outpatient clinical and research support to the Oncology clinical practice. The NP will work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary health team, delivering comprehensive and age-appropriate care to both well and ill patients, educating patients and families, and intervening in acute or chronic illness. The NP will serve as the primary provider for a caseload of patients in the pediatric oncology program, with support from faculty in pediatric oncology, children’s center subspecialties, and adult oncology as needed.

Responsibilities

Patient Care

• Provides comprehensive, age-appropriate, and longitudinal survivorship care to patients as a member of the multi-disciplinary health care team.
• Obtains patient history and performs physical examinations.
• Attends outpatient clinics and assists with patient management.
• Prepares and provides treatment summaries, care plans, and educational information to childhood cancer survivors in accordance with COG guidelines (or similar survivorship guidelines).
• Delivers direct clinical care to survivors, including ordering labs and screening procedures (e.g., echocardiogram, pulmonary function tests, DEXA scans), evaluating results, and referring to subspecialties for abnormal findings.
• Screens for recurrence of primary disease (e.g., imaging) under the direction of pediatric oncology specialties and consults with specialty providers for abnormal results.
• Assists in coordination of patient care for survivorship issues within Johns Hopkins and external institutions.
• Provides information to staff regarding patient's care plan and condition.
• Develops effective care/treatment plans for assigned patients according to established protocols and procedures.
• Consults with supervisory physicians and other professionals before implementing treatment plans.
• Structures patient care plans to meet educational, physical, and social needs appropriate to the patient's age.
• Provides relevant patient care information to appropriate staff members.
• Educates patients and family members regarding diagnosis, complications, treatment, and medications.

Procedures

• Performs routine laboratory procedures such as cultures, smears, venipuncture, and electrocardiograms.
• Performs advanced procedures such as bone marrow aspiration and biopsy, skin biopsy, lumbar puncture, and other necessary procedures.

Emergency Care

• Maintains CPR certification.
• Maintains airway, breathing, and circulation.
• Provides basic CPR.
• Orders and administers anti-anaphylactic and supportive medications.

Prescribing Medications

• Prescribes medications, including oral, parenteral, intramuscular, or subcutaneous drugs.
• Prescribes Schedule 2, 2N, 3, 3N, 4, and 5 drugs under the guidelines of the Maryland Nurse Practice Act and the DEA.

Research Coordination

• Works with specific protocols to ensure protocol-driven tests, examinations, and procedures are ordered, performed, evaluated, and data is recorded.
• Coordinates scheduling, orders appropriate tests, evaluates results, records data, performs patient evaluations, and participates in care of patients on specific protocols.
• Collaborates with Principal Investigators to ensure completeness of protocol requirements.

Educational Responsibilities

• Develops expertise and expands knowledge in specific areas and shares that knowledge with colleagues.
• Participates in rounds and meetings for consultation.
• Serves as a resource for cancer survivorship care across Johns Hopkins Hospital.
• Provides educational opportunities to residents and fellows on cancer survivorship issues.
• Supervises and evaluates student/patient interactions in an academic setting.
• Performs oncology-related procedures such as bone marrow aspiration and biopsy, lumbar puncture, and bone marrow harvest.

Fiscal Responsibility

• Assumes fiscal responsibility with a working knowledge of the evidence-based medical model.
• Effectively uses resources of the patient and the institution.
• Adheres to specific capitations and limitations of the patient’s insurances while organizing and optimizing individualized care.
• Utilizes referrals to Home Health to provide optimum care in the appropriate setting.
• Has knowledge of and utilizes all available resources in the event that the patient’s resources are limited or unavailable.

Referrals

• Works in collaboration with physicians to detect deviations from normalcy or established protocols requiring consultation and/or referral to appropriate specialty areas.

Requirements

• Master's Degree in Nursing.
• Registered Nurse license and Certified as a Nurse Practitioner.
• Must be licensed as an NP in the State of Maryland or other state where practicing.
• Current CPR certification required.
• Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment.
• Additional education may substitute for required experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Pay

Starting salary range: $112,572 - $152,900 annually ($120,100 targeted; commensurate with experience).

Schedule

Full Time, Monday-Friday / Day shift.
