Nurse Practitioner-Oncology Admission (Inpatient)-Mount Sinai Hospital-Full Time - Day (4 10hr)

Full-time Nurse Practitioner role in Oncology Admissions (Inpatient) at Mount Sinai Hospital, scheduled as four 10-hour day shifts per week.

About the role

A Nurse Practitioner (NP), as defined by New York Education Law Title VIII, Article 139 section 6910, is a Registered Nurse who has earned separate certification through advanced clinical education in a distinct specialty. NPs are independent practitioners who diagnose, treat, and prescribe for patients within their specialty without requiring physician countersignature on medical orders, progress notes, or treatment plans.

Responsibilities

Clinical Practice

• Assess the health status of patients and families through comprehensive health history and physical examination.
• Initiate and order therapeutic and diagnostic procedures, consultations, and laboratory examinations; prescribe medication regimens; interpret findings; and alter the plan of care according to accepted standards and practice guidelines.
• Educate and counsel patients on health promotion, maintenance, disease prevention, and management of acute/chronic illnesses.
• Document findings and plan of care in the patient’s medical record.
• Consult with physicians according to established standards, policies, procedures, and protocols.
• Demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of patients served.
• Initiate referrals to specialty services and foster continuity of care.
• Participate in team meetings and conferences to enhance an interdisciplinary approach to care delivery.
• Maintain patient and employee confidentiality in information management.
• Develop and record the plan of care based on diagnoses and individual patient needs; report and interpret client responses to the plan.
• Perform patient record reviews with the collaborating physician at least every three months if using a collaborative practice agreement.
• Complete Focused Professional Practice Proctoring Evaluation (FPPE) or Ongoing Professional Practice Proctoring Evaluation (OPPE) as required for credentialing.
• Practice as a member of the allied health staff according to Medical Staff rules and hospital bylaws.

Requirements

• Ability to perform history taking and physical assessment techniques.
• Demonstrate and document competency in specialty-specific procedures as part of initial orientation and annual performance review.
• Interpret and apply principles of nursing research utilization.
• Manage and coordinate a patient caseload.
• Work within a Collaborative Practice Agreement or Collaborative Practice Relationship Attestation as part of the healthcare team.
• Physical stamina and manual dexterity to perform tasks and skills in the assigned area.
• Excellent interpersonal, communication, problem-solving, critical thinking, and leadership skills.

Qualifications

• New York State license with current registration as a Registered Nurse.
• State certification as a Nurse Practitioner with current registration from the New York State Department of Education:
  • Graduate of a New York State registered Nurse Practitioner Program or equivalent, or
  • Certified as a Nurse Practitioner by a national association via examination.
• Completion of a pharmacy component (minimum required semester hours or equivalent) and instruction in New York State and Federal laws relating to prescriptions and recordkeeping (3-hour course).
• Collaborative Practice Agreement with a physician and designated protocols if less than 3,600 hours of experience as a practicing Nurse Practitioner, or Collaborative Relationship with a physician based on employment at Mount Sinai Hospital if more than 3,600 practice hours.
• Master’s degree in a program designed to prepare an NP to diagnose, treat, and prescribe, or successful completion of an approved supplemental education program (e.g., post-master’s NP certificate).
• Previous progressive experience relevant to the area of clinical practice.
• National Board Certification in Advanced Practice Nursing required for all NPs hired after June 1, 2019, or for those who bill for professional services regardless of hire date (may be deferred up to 1 year with approval).
• Credentialed through the Credentialing Committee of the Medical Board with approved Delineation of Privileges.
• Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) certificate and Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Neonatal Advanced Life Support (NALS), or Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certificates as required by specialty.
