About the role
Part-time Nurse Practitioner I position in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
Responsibilities
- Elicit, record, and/or review medical histories and perform acute primary care physical examinations on patients ranging from newborn through geriatric.
- Provide general and specific health and medical instruction to patients, clients, and families.
- Coordinate individual and family health management, utilizing physician resources or community agencies.
- Provide guidance, instruction, treatment, and referral in areas such as family planning, sexually transmitted diseases (STD), Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), drug abuse, child care, and hygiene.
- Assist patients with selection, fitting, and placement of appropriate contraceptive devices.
- Perform early diagnostic examinations including vision, hearing, pap smears, and other examinations.
- Order laboratory tests, x-rays, electrocardiograms, and other diagnostic tests; collect specimens, perform and interpret selected laboratory tests, and take action on abnormalities as necessary.
- Provide immunizations and administer injections.
- Identify basic and complex medical conditions; determine if patient problems require immediate physician consultation.
- Treat conditions and manage stable phases of chronic illnesses following specific protocols established by physicians, including dispensing and/or administering medication when indicated.
- Alert appropriate medical personnel and/or agencies of potential community health problems.
- Provide routine prenatal care and post-partum follow-up for mother and child; conduct newborn and well-child examinations.
- Provide comprehensive health screening assessments and treatment of pediatric illness.
- Observe and evaluate emotional condition of patients; counsel and support patients regarding psychosocial problems and inter-relationships.
- Provide emergency treatment or referral for patients with severe emotional upsets.
- Work in hospital, outpatient, custodial, public health, satellite, and mobile staff settings; may coordinate clinic activities.
- Orient and oversee nursing students, medical students, and other providers.
- Provide Quality Assurance through review and audit of clinic charts to ensure adequate medical management and follow-up; provide consultation to other providers.
- Keep records and complete forms and questionnaires as required.
- Attend meetings and workshops; serve on committees as assigned; provide consultation and assistance in areas of specialty to other areas of Health Care Services.
- Participate in and may conduct in-service training.
Requirements
Knowledge
- General procedures, techniques, and equipment used in family medicine, community health, mental health, and professional nursing.
- Medical terminology, hospital and clinic routines, equipment, and facilities.
- Full range of medical conditions of applicable medical specialty, including prevention, diagnosis, and treatment procedures.
- Maternal and child health practices; basic laboratory procedures.
- Uses, effects, problems, and treatment of abuse of medicines and narcotics.
- Social, public health, mental health, and other community treatment agencies.
- Principles of human behavior, including causes, symptoms, and treatment of mental illness and instability.
- Basic medical record keeping; diverse needs and problems of various cultural groups.
- Principles and practices of communicable disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.

Pay
Approximate salary: $81.67 - $99.27/hour.

- Life Insurance:
- 1 but less than 3 years of service: $1,000

- 125 Flexible Benefits Plan: Voluntary program allowing pre-tax dollars for health-related expenses (Health Flexible Spending Account: $2,550 annual limit with $500 carryover) and dependent care costs (Dependent Care Assistance Plan: $5,000 annual limit).
- Retirement Plan: Covered by the County Retirement Act of 1937. Visit SJCERA for details.
- Deferred Compensation: Annual contribution limit of $22,500 (or 100% of includible compensation, whichever is less). Individuals age 50+ may contribute up to $30,000. Roth IRA (after-tax) also available.
- Vacation: 15 days annually up to 10 years; 20 days after 10 years; 23 days after 20 years. Accrual rate prorated for part-time employees eligible for benefits.
- Holidays: 14 paid holidays per year.
- Educational Leave: 40 hours annually for full-time employees; 24 hours for part-time employees eligible for benefits. Not carried beyond the fiscal year.
- Sick Leave: 12 working days annually with unlimited accumulation. Eligible for 8 hours of administrative leave if leave balance is at least half of cumulative accrual and employee is on payroll the entire calendar year.
- Bereavement Leave: 3 days paid leave for death of an immediate family member; 2 additional days of accrued leave for death of spouse, domestic partner, parent, or child.
- Merit Salary Increase: Eligible for a step increase after 52 weeks (2,080 hours) on each step of the salary range (1,840 hours for part-time employees).
- Standby Pay: Employees in standby status compensated at 33.33% of their regular hourly rate.
- Educational Supplement: 5% of base salary for nurses meeting one of the following:
- For classifications requiring an Associate’s Degree in Nursing: possession of a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing (or Bachelor’s in Psychology/Social Work for Mental Health nurses).
- For classifications requiring a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing: possession of a Master’s of Science in Nursing.
- Possession of a National or approved International certification.
