Responsibilities
- Conducting physical examinations, developing treatment plans and monitoring patients
- Managing acute and chronic conditions such as asthma, hypertension, and diabetes
- Administering medications and providing instructions to patients
- Monitoring and documenting patient health including vital signs, medical histories
- Providing direct patient care, triaging, assessing patient needs, developing care plans, and coordinating services
- Responding to medical emergencies, providing first aid, and ensuring timely transport to appropriate healthcare facilities
- Educating patients on preventative care, healthy lifestyle choices, and substance abuse prevention
- Understanding and adhering to correctional facility security protocols, while working closely with correctional officers and other healthcare professionals, to ensure the safety and well-being of patients
- Maintaining accurate medical records, documenting treatment plans, and reporting any relevant information
- Conducting rounds, evaluating patients returning from off-site treatment
- Admitting and discharging patients from the facility
Qualifications
- Advanced nursing education (Master's or Doctorate)
- Current licensure as a Nurse Practitioner
- Must hold a current unrestricted license as a Nurse Practitioner in IA
- CURRENT DEA registration
- An appropriate collaborative agreement with the on-site Physician
- Must possess an active BLS CPR Certification (American Heart Association preferred)
- Be certified in a Board recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties
- Possess an active criminal background check and drug screening
Skills
- Knowledge of nursing practice principles and techniques, occupational health and safety standards, infectious disease management, applicable health care laws, regulations, and procedures for direct health care services
- Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills
- Able to work independently and in a team
- Experience working in a correctional facility or acute care center is a plus
Physical Capabilities
- Must have the ability to stand for long periods
- Lift and move patients (up to 50 pounds)
- Bend, squat, reach, push, pull, walk significant distances
- Perform physically demanding tasks like CPR, all while maintaining good balance and endurance throughout a shift
