About the Role

This position involves managing and supervising nursing departments, collaborating with nursing leaders and other facility managers to ensure excellent patient care, achieve financial objectives, and foster leadership development. The Nurse Manager is accountable for developing departmental structure, processes, and outcome standards, typically for one unit. Responsibilities are distributed as follows:

  • 50% Tactical (day-to-day activities like staffing and equipment availability)
  • 40% Operational (budget management, supply acquisition, and employee performance evaluations)
  • 10% Strategic (developing goals to meet the Intermountain/Regional Strategic Plan and holding employees accountable to these goals)

There are two scope levels for this role:

  • Nurse Manager (Level 1): Manages fewer than 50 headcount or a department operating Monday through Friday.
  • Nurse Manager-Complex (Level 2): Manages more than 50 headcount or more than 2 departments and a department operating 24/7.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the clinical nursing environment, contribute to strategic planning, day-to-day operations, and standards of care.
  • Facilitate collaborative problem-solving, advocate for resources, promote shared decision-making, and implement the organization's vision and values.
  • Manage budgets, ensure employee engagement, recruitment, retention, and competency verification.
  • Champion the use of available resources to ensure nursing care is efficient, effective, safe, and delivered with compassion.
  • Facilitate collaborative decision-making and uphold professional independence by contributing departmental perspectives to executive decisions.
  • Assist with development, implementation, and management of annual capital/operating and personnel (FTE) budget for the unit.
  • Model and foster an environment of professionalism and employee engagement on the unit.
  • Ensure a competent and sufficient number of staff to meet patient care needs, including hiring, orientation, retention, and employee satisfaction.
  • Ensure new skill training and ongoing competency verification is completed annually by providing mentorship and professional educational opportunities.
  • Evaluate staff competency through performance reviews and peer reviews.
  • Coordinate performance and compliance with patient safety initiatives, federal, state, and other regulatory bodies such as Joint Commission, OSHA, CMS, and DOPL.
  • Facilitate the use of resources by nursing staff, such as nurse practitioners and other specialty roles.
  • Serve as an exemplary figure for employees, promoting the integration of Healing Commitments and Healing Connections within patient care.
  • Monitor and improve patient satisfaction using available service metrics and national benchmarks.
  • Partner with physicians at the unit level to achieve clinical, operational, and service goals.
  • Support the Nurse Director in overseeing, organizing, and facilitating the activities of student nurses.
  • Support staff participation in outside community organizations such as volunteer health clinics, health fairs, and advisory boards.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) from an accredited institution.
  • Current Nursing License to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of practice. Valid compact licenses must be transferred to the state of practice within 60 days of employment.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for Healthcare Providers.
  • Leadership/supervisory experience.
  • Must complete Intermountain Health’s required leadership training and development courses within one year of accepting the position.
  • 2 years of clinical experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree and previous ICU experience.
  • Specialty Certification.
  • Demonstrated experience in the area of oversight.

Physical Requirements

  • Ongoing need to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, and identify equipment and supplies.
  • Frequent interactions requiring verbal communication, hearing, and understanding spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly, especially during emergencies.
  • Manual dexterity to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision, including frequent computer use and typing.
  • Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients, bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment, including heavy items.
  • Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining/distributing supplies and equipment, including pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment.
  • Often required to navigate crowded and busy rooms (full of equipment, power cords on the floor, etc.).
  • May be expected to stand in a stationary position for extended periods.
  • For roles requiring driving: Expected to drive a vehicle, which involves sitting, seeing, and reading signs, traffic signals, and other vehicles.

Schedule

Full time, 40 hours/week, Monday - Friday 8am - 5pm, with a 24/7 obligation to the department.

Pay

The hourly range for this position is $51.73 - $79.87. Actual hourly rate is dependent upon experience.
