This job description applies to Nurse Manager and Nurse Manager-Complex, differing primarily by scope level.

About the Role

This role involves managing and supervising nursing departments, collaborating with nursing leaders and other facility managers to ensure excellent patient care, achieve financial objectives, and foster leadership development. The position is accountable for developing departmental structure, processes, and outcome standards, typically for one unit.

  • 50% Tactical: day-to-day activities such as staffing and equipment availability
  • 40% Operational: budget management, supply acquisition, and employee performance evaluations
  • 10% Strategic: developing goals aligned with the Intermountain/Regional Strategic Plan and holding employees accountable

Scope Level 1 (Nurse Manager): Manages fewer than 50 headcount or a department operating Monday through Friday.

Scope Level 2 (Nurse Manager-Complex): Manages more than 50 headcount, more than 2 departments, or a department operating 24/7.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the clinical nursing environment, contributing to strategic planning, day-to-day operations, and standards of care
  • Facilitate collaborative problem-solving, advocate for resources, and promote shared decision-making
  • Implement the organization’s vision and values while managing budgets and ensuring employee engagement, recruitment, retention, and competency verification
  • Champion the use of resources to ensure nursing care is efficient, effective, safe, and compassionate, aligned with current practice standards
  • Facilitate collaborative decision-making and uphold professional independence by contributing departmental perspectives to executive decisions
  • Assist with the development, implementation, and management of annual capital/operating and personnel (FTE) budgets for the unit
  • Model and foster an environment of professionalism and employee engagement
  • Ensure a competent and sufficient number of staff to meet patient care needs, including hiring, orientation, retention, and employee satisfaction
  • Ensure new skill training and ongoing competency verification through mentorship and professional educational opportunities
  • Evaluate staff competency via performance reviews and peer reviews
  • Coordinate performance and compliance with patient safety initiatives, federal, state, and regulatory bodies (e.g., Joint Commission, OSHA, CMS, DOPL)
  • Facilitate the use of resources such as nurse practitioners, expanded role RNs, and other specialty roles
  • Serve as an exemplary figure for employees, promoting the integration of Healing Commitments and Healing Connections in patient care
  • Monitor and improve patient satisfaction using service metrics and national benchmarks to develop action plans
  • Partner with physicians at the unit level to achieve clinical, operational, and service goals
  • Support the Nurse Director in overseeing and facilitating activities for student nurses
  • Encourage staff participation in community organizations such as volunteer health clinics, health fairs, and advisory boards

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) from an accredited institution (degree will be verified)
  • Current Nursing License to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of practice (valid compact licenses must be transferred within 60 days of employment)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for Healthcare Providers
  • Leadership/supervisory experience
  • Completion of Intermountain Health’s required leadership training and development courses within one year of accepting the position
  • 2 years of clinical experience

Preferred Qualifications

Physical Requirements

  • Ongoing need to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, and identify equipment and supplies
  • Frequent verbal communication with care providers, patients, and visitors, including hearing and understanding spoken information, alarms, and needs quickly, especially during emergencies
  • Manual dexterity for complex and delicate equipment, including frequent computer use and typing for documentation, medication preparation, etc.
  • Lifting and utilizing full range of movement to transfer patients, bend, retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment (including heavy items)
  • Walking and assisting with transporting/ambulating patients, pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment (including heavy items), and navigating crowded/busy rooms
  • Standing in a stationary position for extended periods
  • For roles requiring driving: ability to drive a vehicle, including sitting, seeing, and reading signs, traffic signals, and other vehicles

Schedule

  • Full time, 40 hours/week, Monday - Friday, 8am - 5pm
  • 24/7 obligation to the department

Pay

$51.73 - $79.87 per hour, dependent upon experience.
